The smartphone and the tablet have made traveling considerably easier. You no longer have to lug around heavy guidebooks, or unwieldy paper maps, for one. But mobile apps go way beyond that. You can download apps that can translate, convert currency, guide you to attractions, and even find you a cab. And with apps that work offline, you don't have to worry about racking up data charges when abroad or out of your coverage area. (You're also covered if your phone doesn't work internationally.) Here are 6 apps that will help you in your travels without adding to your expenses.
OffMaps2 (Free; iPhone, iPad)*
OffMaps2 is not only a great alternative to folding paper maps; it also avoids skyrocketing international data bills. The app stores maps on your device so that you can search them offline. Two maps are included for free, additional maps can be purchased at $0.99 for three downloads or you can pay a flat rate ($5.99) and download as many as you like. Map updates are free. The latest version includes transit maps for some cities, as well as offline access to Wikipedia pages about the city or attraction you're visiting.
WiFi-Finder (Free; iPhone, iPad and Android)
This app does exactly what its name says: it finds free or paid Wi-Fi when you travel. You can tailor your search to specific providers or filter by location (restaurants, cafes, hotels, etc.) For each result, you will be given a phone number and directions on how to get there. With over 650,000 locations in 144 countries worldwide, it is likely that you will find one near you. Before you leave, you can download their entire Wi-Fi directory so you can search offline while on the road.
iTranslate (Free; iPhone, iPad and Android)
With iTranslate, you can leave your translation dictionary at home. This app translates over 50 languages instantly using voice recognition technology (using this feature requires an in-app purchase of about $2). You don't even need to tell it what the source language is; the app will recognize it automatically. iTranslate can also speak - in 18 languages, great for when asking a local for directions. Several dictionaries are also included for when you're stumped by a sign or menu item. iTranslate requires an internet connection, but using WiFi means you can avoid data charges.
ATM Hunter (Free; iPhone, iPad, Android and Blackberry)
Created by MasterCard, this app allows you to locate the closest ATM and PayPass acceptance locations. You can search ATMs based on the following: bank name; location; drive-through, open 24 hours, wheelchair accessible, surcharge fees and deposit sharing (the ability to make a deposit at an ATM in the same network as your bank). You'll need to have your GPS on in order to use this app - data charges only come into play if you use turn-by-turn navigation to get to the ATM.
Ask a Nomad (Free; iPhone and iPad)
Regardless of whether you would like to learn more about surfing in Bali or assist others with your culinary expertise of the Big Apple, this app connects people with a passion for travel so that they can share their knowledge. You can carry your questions and answers with you on the road - offline. Any new questions you have asked will be sent out and answered when you next go online.
XE Currency (Free; iPhone, iPad, Blackberry, Windows Phone 7 and Android)
A currency converter is essential to avoid overspending. This app features live currency rates, but also stores the most recently updated rates so that you can access them offline. You can store up to ten currencies at a time.
