More TV bargains and bundles for Black Friday

Earlier this month, we blogged about some TV deals that caught our eye in the first wave of leaked Black Friday circulars. Now that the bulk of the circulars -- and the last-minute surprise add-ons to those circulars -- have made the scene, the full picture on TV deals for Black Friday and Black Friday eve has come into focus. Since the shopping holiday is more about value and bottom-line pricing, it's really no surprise that discounts on top performing sets are modest at best. However if good-enough performance is good enough in exchange for a hard-to-beat price, there are some buys to be had. Check out our earlier post for some pretty good deals. In addition, here are a couple of others to consider.

Cheap Black Friday tablets: Clunkers and gems for $200 and less

We might not yet be in the "post-PC world" that some tech pundits claim to see, but one thing's for certain: tablets are hot, and they're only getting hotter. Amazon poured gas on the situation with its new $199 Kindle Fire, and this year's Black Friday deals are looking to capitalize on the tablet craze with a bevy of tablets that ring up for even less than Amazon's budget offering. But does value pricing make cheap tablets a value purchase? Let's examine some of the $200 and under Black Friday tablet deals and find out.

The trend is back! Royal ring knock-offs are everywhere

Sure, this isn't hard-hitting news, just something interesting we've noticed. This year's royal wedding has rekindled a trend. In pretty much every store circular (except maybe Bass Pro Shops and Cabelas), you'll see some version (sometimes more than one) of Princess Diana's (now Kate's) saphire and diamond engagement ring. Here's a look at the knock-off contenders if you're looking to surprise the princess (or the royal watcher) in your life.

Run away from Black Friday treadmill deals

Buying a treadmill could be on your list of end of year purchases but Black Friday isn't necessarily the day to do it. After looking at the circulars from Dick's Sporting Goods, Kmart, Modell's, Sears and Sports Authority, our advice is to skip the Black Friday sprint and run your favorite route instead.

Should you jump on a Black Friday deal for a streaming digital media player?

During our annual perusal of leaked Black Friday sale circulars, one of the items that's popped onto the radar this year is the digital media player. These are excellent gifts (my wife and I gave her brother a Roku for Christmas last year and it was a big hit), and retailers appear to have caught onto this. Walmart has the RCA DSB772WEl in its flyer listed at $39 (that's also the regular Walmart.com price, so there's no need to run to the store). Best Buy has the Sony SMPN100 media player listed for $49.99 ($50 off the regular price). While those low prices may be tempting, you're better off ignoring them and buying a Roku device instead.

Stalking the doorbuster: Your plan for bagging the Black Friday deal

If you've been reading these Black Friday blog posts on Productopia, you know that we don't think too highly of Black Friday deals in general. You just need to pick through the circulars so carefully to find the real values. Stores tend to reserve their best prices for their "doorbuster" deals, and the most tempting of those are often subject to additional restrictions, like very limited availability -- sometimes only four or five units per store. So if you have your heart set on one of those limited availability doorbusters, how can you increase your chances of snagging one?

Black Friday eReader deals: some are a steal, others are just highway robbery

When it comes to e-book readers, two names are usually part of any discussion: the Amazon Kindle and the Barnes & Noble Nook. Both eReader lines have recently seen significant improvements -- and significant price cuts. It's not a huge surprise, then, that good eReader "deals" are few and far between this Black Friday. To be sure, there are lots of "offers" in the circulars, but little actual discounting. Does that mean that the eReader bargain hunter is shut out this Black Friday? Of course not! Let's dig in to find the best -- and the worst -- of this year's ebook reader deals.

Cake-pop and donut machines are popular, but do they work?

To the untrained eye, they look like funky waffle irons, but look closer and the machines you're seeing in the Black Friday circulars are actually cake-pop, donut, mini-pie and muffin makers. They look pretty cute; buying one of these machines could actually be less expensive than buying a dozen cake pops or fancy muffins for a party. But do they save as much time as they promise?

Ho-hum holiday prices on sewing machines: Here's the scoop

If you're thinking of buying a sewing machine for a young Project Runway fan, the holidays are usually a good time to snag a deal. That's not really the case this year. Whereas last year saw sewing machines featured in half a dozen Black Friday circulars, only a handful are offered this year. Since so many sewing machines are made in Thailand, I suspect that this year's flooding in that country may be affecting inventory (I've got calls in to Singer and Brother to find out). But in the meantime, if a sewing machine is on your list, here's what looks best among the slim pickings.
