Juicer vs. blender

Many juicers and blenders excel at predictable tasks like juicing and making smoothies, but high-end versions of these machines are being pushed further and further into multitasking territory.

For high-end blenders, this means more power and pitchers shaped to funnel food smoothly into the spinning blades. Among juicers, masticating models -- which use rotating augers or gears to slowly crush produce -- show the most multitasking ability. Some can even make foods like nut butter, pasta and baby food.

So which machine is a better investment? Consider how each appliance would fare in this head-to-head boxing match: Read more

Blender vs. food processor: How do they match up?

Food guru Mark Bittman, writing for The New York Times, has declared the blender "an endangered species." A good food processor, he argues, can do everything a blender can do, and lots more besides. His own blender, in fact, has been shut unused in the closet for over a year, while his food processor has earned a permanent place on his "itsy-bitsy counter."

There's no denying that a food processor can do many jobs a blender can't. It can slice vegetables, shred cabbage, knead bread dough and make flaky piecrust. But what about the foods that both a blender and a food processor can handle, like smoothies or hummus? Which appliance does a better job with these? Based on professional test results and user feedback, here's how these machines would fare in a small-appliance boxing match: Read more

Here we go: The first of the leaked Black Friday circulars are being hastily scanned and slapped online at sites like BlackFriday.com and BFAds.net. But as we saw last year (and pretty much every year), it takes a keen eye and a lot of research to separate the actual good buys from the dross.

Whether you're fixing a pitcher of margaritas or making a batch of homemade hummus for guests, one thing's certain: You need a good blender to be successful. The good news? You don't need to spend a lot of money -- though you certainly can if you opt for the best overall multipurpose blender, the Vita-Mix 5200 (*Est. $450). High price is just about the only drawback you'll find there, however, as the 2-horsepower Vita-Mix excels at everything from crushing ice and making fruit smoothies to grinding grains into flour. Just cover your ears -- some reviewers compare the noise it makes to that of a jet engine.
