They're here: 3D TVs, Blu-ray players hit retailers' shelves

In separate press events in New York this week, Samsung and Panasonic officially announced that 3D-capable TVs and Blu-ray players are now on sale, with even more models expected over the coming months.  Despite the hoopla and some rosy projections over how many sets will be sold this year and in years to come, there's still more than enough skepticism to go around. Some new bumps in the path to 3D have also surfaced, such as concerns that Samsung's first 3D Blu-ray players might not actually be able to show content in 3D. For now, at least, we have a clearer picture of what 3D will actually cost early adopters, and that's a mixed bag. Read more

What's up with upconversion?

If you've shopped for gear for a home theater, you've probably noticed that upconversion is a standard feature in lots of different types of equipment, including DVD players, Blu-ray players, LCD TVs, plasma TVs and even many home-theater receivers. For those unfamiliar with it, upconversion (also called upscaling) is the process used to transform standard-definition TV images to high-definition resolutions. One of our readers, Robert, recently wrote in to ask: "In a home theater, what component is best for performing upconversion, and is there any benefit in doing upconversion more than once?

Home theater on a budget: Where to scrimp and where to spend

In these tight times, everyone is interested in saving a little bit of cash where they can, even when putting together a home-theater system. As an example, one of our readers recently wrote to ask "If you are putting together a home theater system on a fixed budget, where can you get away with scrimping a bit and where does it pay to put performance first?"

Wal-Mart Black Friday Blu-ray player deal set to return, Blu-ray Disc sales take off

If you're among those who missed out on Black Friday's Blu-ray player deals, fear not: The cheapest of them all is set for a return engagement. Home Media magazine reports that beginning this Saturday, December 12,  Wal-Mart is again offering the Magnavox NB500 at $78, the same price as on Black Friday, when it was a doorbuster special. The sale is set to run through Dec. 18, or as long as players are available, but you will have to go to the store itself to get one, as the deal is not being offered on line.

Is the Warner DVD to Blu-ray Disc swap offer a good deal?

Warner Brothers, the studio that gave Blu-ray the final boost it needed to make it the de facto standard for high-def discs, is giving the format another bump with a program aimed at cutting the cost of switching over from DVD to Blu-ray. DVD2Blu lets owners of certain Warner Brothers DVDs swap them at relatively low cost for Blu-ray Discs of the same title. The swapped-for Blu-rays cost either $7.95 or $9.95, depending on the movie, and shipping is free if you spend $25 or more for the upgraded discs. But before you get too excited, let's step back for a second and see how good a deal this really is.

Blu-ray player bargains for Black Friday

Though it's not the $50 Blu-ray player that some thought would be out there for Black Friday this year, the $78 Magnavox NB500 that Wal-Mart is offering as a doorbuster is still the cheapest Blu-ray player we've seen to date. This Funai-made player has been around for quite a while now under various brand names, including Philips and Sylvania, and has earned pretty good user feedback. Of course, there's a catch or two.

Plasma TV/Blu-ray bundle a good Black Friday buy at Best Buy

Though a few okay deals can be found, the Black Friday circulars leaked so far haven't held a lot of excitement for those looking to score a home-theater bargain for the holidays. The Best Buy Black Friday circular looks like more of the same for the most part, but one combo deal, a 50-inch Panasonic Viera TC-P50U1 plasma TV and a Panasonic DMP-BD60K Blu-ray player for just under $1,000, made us sit up a little. Taken together, it looks like a little better discount for decent tech than we've seen from many other retailers. Let's dig a little deeper.

Is it finally time to buy a Blu-ray player?

We've just updated our report on Blu-ray players, and the biggest news is how far and how fast the prices of some really excellent choices have dropped. The Panasonic DMP-BD60K, for example, delivers terrific picture quality, especially with Blu-ray Discs, and a reasonably complete mix of features at a street price of around $150. You can also find some lesser but still decent Blu-ray Disc players for even less -- as low as $100 with careful shopping. That $100 price is significant, as that's the price most experts have long said would be the tipping point for mass adoption of the Blu-ray format. So, does that mean that the time is finally right for most people to make the switch to Blu-ray?

Some hits and misses at Wal-Mart's pre-Black Friday sale

Not content to wait until the day after Thanksgiving, Wal-Mart is putting some home-theater electronics up for sale in their brick and mortar stores this Saturday. Scanning through things, we found some ho-ho-hum deals, but also two that could peak the interest of budget TV buyers.

Sony PS3 loses its Blu-ray crown

Reviewers have begun to weigh in on the Sony PS3 Slim's prowess as a Blu-ray player. While the new $299 price has helped re-establish the console as a great value -- especially for those interested in its game-playing abilities -- performance tests reveal some shortcomings. To be sure, tons of pluses remain, and the PS3 Slim remains a very capable Blu-ray spinner. However, if your only interest is in playing back Blu-ray discs, we think that some standalone players deserve serious consideration as well.
