Five apps to make birthday, graduation and other e-cards

Emails and text messages are getting monotonous. If you're planning to send a birthday message on a special day or a congratulations to a graduate across the country, why not go a step further and create a personalized card online. Websites for creating e-cards have been popular for several years, and now there are apps that will help you out on the go, too. You can choose from a variety of designs, from 3D to animation to vintage cards, in addition to adding your own photos and text. Within minutes, you have a card that's ready to go - all you have to do is hit the send button and the app will take care of the rest. What a way to celebrate!

Live from the CTIA Wireless show in New Orleans

Smartphones smartphones smartphones. 4G! 4G! 4G! That about sums up CTIA's Wireless tradeshow. While there's not a whole lot of breaking news here, there's no shortage of great ideas. Visa and Mastercard were demo-ing their mobile payment systems (V.Me and PayPass) which aim to make online and in-person transactions just that much easier. Meanwhile, smartphones were in abundance - many of which are not yet available in the U.S. And most companies had big ideas for 4G. Here's a look at some of the interesting products I've seen - including some truly out there smartphone cases.

Treat your mom with these five modern gifts

Let me guess, last year, you gave your mom flowers on Mother's Day. And the year before that, too. Maybe you took her out for brunch. While giving flowers and treating her to a delicious meal continue to be appreciated as presents, why not do something a bit different this year? Smartphone apps can help you bring a modern flair to Mother's Day, whether you want to bake your own Mother's Day dish, or create a customized eCard or entire eBook. Why not put together a special gift, such as a collection of "mom appreciation" songs. Or bring the whole family together to watch a Mother's Day TV episode. All in all, it's a special day for your mother - make sure you show her how much you love her!

Five gardening apps to try this spring

Put away those gardening books. This spring, you can use apps to figure out exactly what to plant and when - and to keep track of your growing garden. Whether you've always been a fan of homegrown vegetables or are simply looking for some inspiration as to which herbs you might have in your kitchen, there are helpful smartphone apps, with encyclopedias on thousands of plant species available at your fingertips. In addition, mobile apps can help you set a gardening schedule, including to-do lists, reminders and estimates of when plants will be ready for harvest. This way, you can stay on top of your garden and truly enjoy your time out in nature.

Three free apps that let you shop till you drop

On a recent rainy day, when I was particularly keen on staying home, I gave three free shopping apps a try: Google Shopper, eBay and Amazon Mobile. Each offers different ways to search for and purchase products, including bar code scanning - with varying degrees of success. Check out our photo gallery, which includes a screenshot walkthrough of each mobile shopping app.

Fashion forward mobile apps

Now that spring is in full swing, it's time to change wardrobes. While some people are inherent fashion gurus, others might need a little advice on what to wear. And finding the latest fashion trends is easier than ever. Thanks to mobile apps, you can now consult fashion experts, create virtual closets, share your finds and shop from wherever you are. I headed straight for two of the most popular fashion sites: Style.com (iPhone, iPad, Nook Color) and Net-a-porter.com (iPhone, Android, iPad) to test their new, free apps.

Go gourmet with apps

I remember the times when I used to compile multiple shopping lists from several different cookbooks. At the grocery store, I would frantically take out my post-it lists and wander the aisles looking for the ingredients. Back home, when I finally got started in the kitchen, the paper cookbook would get splashed with water, greased with oil, and if I was baking, covered in flour. I would then realize that the timer on my oven wasn't working, and that I needed to look at my watch every five minutes to make sure things didn't get burnt. All in all, it was a hectic and stressful experience.

Many of my friends had encouraged me to substitute my paper cookbooks for cooking apps, but, as a bookworm, I had been reluctant to let go. Cooking apps abound, and after writing about wine apps, I finally decided to give it a shot with three free apps: Epicurious, Dinner Spinner by All Recipes and Real Recipes from About.com*. At first sight, it appears that all three have similar features. For purposes of comparison, I began by searching for a popular recipe: chocolate chip cookies.

Five apps to boost your smartphone's battery life

Modern day smartphones are models of multitasking convenience -- as long as they carry a charge, that is. The more capabilities you cram into a phone, the shorter its battery life. Fortunately, you aren't entirely helpless in the battle against lackluster battery life. We've already covered some fairly simple tweaks that'll keep your handset chugging all day long, but not everybody's the hands-on type.  So today, let's take a look at five battery-saving apps that will do the dirty work for you.

What's new in the mobile phone world?

It's been a busy few weeks in the mobile world. Aside from the countless smartphones -- Windows Phones, Androids and BlackBerrys -- being released every day, there's all sorts of intrigue in the wireless space. Here's a look at some of the more interesting developments, including unlocking the iPhone, cell phone wiretaps, and an FCC plan to deter cell phone theft.

Study for the SATs on the go

Preparing for college used to involve thick SAT prep books. Those who could afford to would take part in a prep class or even get a private tutor. Now, thanks to technology, there are more flexible (and cheaper) options available. Apps allow you to take learning on the go, and make it more fun. Whether you need to brush up on your math or expand your vocabulary, there are apps that allow you to focus on every aspect of the SAT. Consider the following options to study, practice and monitor your improvement from wherever you are.
