2013 Infiniti JX, 2013 Lexus GS 350, and Cadillac Ciel debut at Pebble Beach

California's Monterey Peninsula is one of the focal points of the automotive world this weekend, as innumerable classic and exotic cars worth millions of dollars descend upon it for a few days of car shows, vintage races, high-profile auctions, and other related revelry. The main event, as always, is the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, where last night, three new vehicles made their debuts. Two of them, from Lexus and Infiniti, you'll be able to buy. The other, a spectacular ultra-luxury concept convertible from Cadillac, is just special. Keep reading for a quick rundown on all three cars, along with photos of each.

Fuel-efficient convertibles deliver summer fun, even as gas prices spike

Spring is here, and so is the nice weather (finally). A great way to take advantage of this is hitting your local cruising spots in a new convertible. Problem: gas prices are well past $4.00 per gallon in a lot of places, and if things continue at the current rate, $5.00 gas is likely to be a harsh reality this summer. Despite the wet blanket that is soaring fuel prices, frugal convertible shoppers actually have a number of options that are both reasonably priced and offer better fuel economy than you might expect. Porsche 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid supercar is a go. Bring money.

Apparently, Porsche is sick of everyone stealing the supercar thunder, so it's going into production with the 918 Spyder, a plug-in hybrid sports car that was previewed as a concept at last year's Geneva Motor Show. Unlike other hyper-performance cars that boast the approximate power of the Millenium Falcon's hyperdrive and the approximate fuel economy of a 1971 Chrysler Imperial, the Porsche 918 Spyder will  be a have-your-cake-and-eat-it machine, with anticipated fuel economy numbers that will be as gaudy as its expected performance. At $845,000, however, that's a lot of cake. Read more

A Nissan Murano convertible? Believe it.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that the 2011 Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet will easily be the most surprising vehicle debut this auto show season. Why? Well, think about it. It's a two-door Nissan Murano convertible -- as unlikely a vehicle as you'd ever expect to see. Yet here we are. The car was shown on Nissan's Facebook page today and will formally debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show later this week. And as nutty as it sounds, I like the idea. Read more

2011 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible looks pretty bitchin'

Pardon the gratuitous Dead Milkmen reference in the headline, but I couldn't help myself. The just-revealed 2011 Chevy Camaro Convertible indeed looks quite bitchin' and should decisively address a couple of the routine complaints reviewers have about the (really excellent-looking) Camaro coupe: the interior is claustrophobic, and outward visibility stinks.  Solution: Cut the roof off entirely. Besides possible hearing damage, what else should you be aware of when driving convertibles?

Earlier last week, you may have read a news story in which British researchers say that driving a convertible with the top down at highway speeds could damage to your hearing over time. The Brits found that some of the driving scenarios can produce sustained sound levels over 90 decibels. That's loud, just so you know. That said, the eggheads noted that simply rolling up the windows gets the noise down to a more manageable, if still loud, level. As a convertible driver myself (that's my car to the left), the article got me thinking about what other stuff you might want to look out for if you choose to roll in a ragtop. Here are some of my personal observations on the topic.
