Apps for photography lovers

Photography used to be an expensive hobby. Now, an entire niche has developed around smartphone photography, so much so that entire museum exhibitions have been centered on iPhotography; that is, photos captured with the iPhone. Here are six apps that allow you, too, to convert your smartphone or tablet into an (almost) professional camera.

Digital cameras that run on AA batteries

Wishing you could find a digital camera that takes AA batteries? While most digital cameras use proprietary rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, there are a handful of models -- the bulk of which are from Canon and Fuji -- that still use standard AA batteries. But do you really want a camera that runs on AA batteries? Well, for one thing, using an AA-powered digital camera makes it easy to have spares along if you start running out of juice. But are there downsides? Sure. Let's dig in to get the full picture.

Canon's G1x: a new kind of compact camera

With smartphones chipping away at the low end of the compact digital camera market, manufacturers makers have been expanding their offerings in an effort to fill the gap between entry level point-and-shoot cameras and Digital SLRs. Panasonic and Olympus collaborated on the Micro Four Thirds standard, releasing a series of compact cameras with interchangeable lenses. Samsung and Sony followed suit, with their own interchangeable lens compacts. Nikon got in the action too, with its 1-series of cameras. And at CES this year, Fuji launched its interchangeable-lens compact, the X-Pro1

Where to shop for digital cameras on Black Friday

As predicted, many of the digital cameras on offer this Black Friday are either no name brands or just poor cameras overall. However, this year a few retailers have stepped up and are offering deals on quality cameras from Canon and Sony. Here's a roundup of where to go and what to buy on Black Friday.

Get a good camera for under $200

If you're planning to buy your first digital camera, a basic point-and-shoot loaded with automatic settings is a good choice -- and a cheap one; you can find a quality camera for $200 or less. Cheap digital cameras aren't the sleekest around, and you may have to give up some features, but they're ideal for first-time buyers and kids. Their bigger size means easier handling and larger buttons - good for small hands. These cameras are also more durable than their slimmer brethren, so they'll survive more bumps and falls. Here we recommend the best cheap digital cameras for you and everyone on your list.

Camera? Printer? Polaroid's PoGo Instant Digital Camera is both

For years, the name Polaroid has been synonymous with the instant-print camera. The classic Polaroid camera’s chief selling point wasn’t picture quality but the fun of printing out your snapshot instantly and watching it develop before your eyes. A couple years back, Polaroid made its first attempt at bringing that experience into the digital age with the introduction of the PoGo Instant Mobile Printer, a pocket-sized snapshot printer that could print photos from a digital camera and from many -- though not all -- Bluetooth-enabled phones. We touch upon the PoGo printer in our report on photo printers. Now Polaroid has gone one step better with the Pogo Instant Digital Camera, a camera and printer in one.

Digital camera deals and steals on Black Friday

As always, this year's Black Friday sales are a mixed bag. In the digital camera realm, most of the deals are small savings rather than deep discounts - though there are some very good models listed in the circulars. This is an improvement from last year, where most of the offerings were off-brand models and/or poorly reviewed ones. Like last year, however, there are several cameras that are actually cheaper now than in the circulars - including the Nikon Coolpix L22, which can be found for about $90 online - as opposed to $100 from Kmart and Office Max. We've noticed a pattern too, this year; anytime a camera is featured in more than one circular, it's for the same price at each store. (Could they be in cahoots?) Here's the best digital camera deals for Black Friday weekend - and what to skip.

Tricked out dorm part 2: Gadgets!

If you're heading off to college this year, you'll want to be armed not only with comforters, laundry baskets and shower caddies, but with some great gadgets as well. And there's so much tech available to make your life easier and to keep you entertained in your downtime. If your parents protest, insist that it's all in the name of a good education.

We've already discussed the best calculators, toughest padlocks and some laundry how-to - now it's time for some fun stuff. Whatever your budget (or your parent's budget), these gadgets shouldn't be too much of a burden on the wallet - and this is what your graduation money is for, right? Still, you should try to save money where you can - including taking advantage of your state's tax holidays, which are usually timed with back-to-school season. So, without further ado, here's our top recommendations for your dorm room.

Get the most out of your next digital camera

You probably already own a digital camera, but is it time for an upgrade? If you find yourself frequently frustrated by poor photo quality (indoor shots are always tricky) or sluggishness (that squirmy baby isn't going to sit still) or a lousy LCD, it may be time to spring for a new one. You can begin by looking at your current camera and determining what it lacks, as well as extra features it might have that you've never used. If you're looking to buy your very first digital camera, our recently-updated report has helpful buying tips and top picks. Here are a few important features to think about if you're ready to buy a new digital camera.

Canon, Kodak and Sony make photo sharing easier

While CES 2010 was dominated by 3D televisions and overrun with eBook readers, there were a few smaller trends to be seen on the show floor. In the digital camera arena, the big news wasn't megapixels or ultra thin form factors - it was in image sharing. Between email and posting to social networks and photo sharing websites, uploading and sharing your pictures can take hours. Three camera companies -- Canon, Kodak and Sony -- each presented new solutions at this year's CES.
