Just how solid are solid-state computer drives?

Solid-state drives (SSDs) are all the rage among the tech elite. Using flash memory instead of the spinning platters of traditional hard drives, SSDs are used as lightweight drives in the thinnest and lightest laptops and as performance boosters in gaming-oriented computers. But just how safe and secure are solid-state drives? Well, according to recent reports, perhaps not as safe as you might think.

Retailers offer Black Friday bargains on some external hard drives

A few years ago at this time, most retailers were pushing 1 TB external hard drives in their Black Friday circulars. This year, consumers will find they can get more memory for their dollars. A survey of sales fliers from Staples, Walmart, Office Max and Best Buy still finds plenty of 1 TB drives, but external hard drives with up to 3 TB of memory are starting to appear.

As was the case last year, Western Digital makes some of the better external hard drives discussed in our full report, and some retailers are offering deals on their products. But we found a few other bargains worth investigating if you're in the market for a new external hard drive to store all those holiday videos and photos.

Deals or duds? External hard drives on Black Friday

Tucked inside most Black Friday circulars, you'll find a couple external hard drives listed. We found drives at Target, Walmart, Best Buy, Office Depot, Staples and OfficeMax. Despite savings of $50 or more, however, none of the models advertised make the list of Best Reviewed products in our report on external hard drives. However, there are one or two deals worth noting.

Take a terabyte out of the holidays with a 1 TB hard drive

You're heard it all before: Buy the biggest hard drive you can when you buy a computer, so you can store all your digital music, photo and video files. But no matter how big your PC's hard drive, sooner or later, it's going to fill up. Even if you have a massive drive, it's a good idea to have backup, because computers do fail (usually at the worst possible moment).

We've spotted a lot of good discounts on hard drives, but based on the reviews we read, we don't think any of them are better than the Western Digital My Book World Edition reviewed in our report on external hard drives.

Protect your data with an external hard drive

They say that three things in life are certain: death, taxes, and the fact that sooner or later your computer will die, leaving you with the taxing problem of recovering your precious data. That's why having a comprehensive plan to back up your computer data regularly -- and sticking with it -- is so important. Using an online backup service is one part of that, but so is using some sort of local back up device, such as a USB flash drive or an external hard drive.
