Pet-free homes are not pet allergen free

Think your pet-free home is free of pet allergens? Not so. Cat dander has been found in places where cats have never stepped foot, according to American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI) case studies. Referred to by allergists as "passive" exposure, cat dander can travel from one place to another from hitchhiking onto clothing and other personal belongings. Read more

Getting the most from your home humidifier

With cold and flu season on its way, you might be planning ahead by getting a flu shot or stocking up on cold remedies. Those shouldn't be the only weapons in your home-health arsenal though. A simple humidifier can make a huge difference in the war against viruses and germs. According to the editors of ConsumerReports.org, adding more humidity to the air in your home may provide relief from cold symptoms. A humidifier can also help prevent uncomfortable dryness of the nose throat, lips and skin, notes a 2004 article from Prevention magazine.

Pharm Aid: Who's got the best cough drops?

Let's face it: Slathering yourself in hand sanitizer and desperately trying to avoid those "achoo-ing" around you doesn't always work. Inevitably, you'll get a cold.

And while we all know there's currently no cure for the common cold, there are a few things -- like cough drops -- that can help us feel a little better. But do cough drops really help you get better faster?

For a laugh, check out our art-house homage, "Une Affaire Humide." While perhaps a tad unrealistic, it does sort of sum up how we feel about product research. We think that "love what you buy" means getting the right product for you - not the most expensive or flashiest gadget, but the one that fits your needs and your budget. Humidifier for one. Make that to go

Humidifiers can be useful appliances, particularly as the weather turns colder and heaters dry out the air. Used occasionally, they can also be soothing for people with colds or upper respiratory infections that dry out the sinuses or throat. As described in ConsumerSearch's full report on humidifiers, most models are designed to be used in large spaces like a bedroom or family room.

That said, if you need something for a very small space like an office cubicle, or if you're a frequent traveler and want something you can easily pack, these humidifiers are too big for the job. In that case, you might want to consider two mini cool-mist humidifiers, both of which are about the size of a squat hardcover book and use plastic water bottles (like you'd find in any convenience store) instead of a reservoir: the Air-O-Swiss 7146 Travel Ultrasonic Humidifier (*Est. $50) and the Sunpentown SU-1051 Mini-Humidifier (*Est. $50).

Beat dry air at home with a good humidifier

An arid atmosphere in your home can make it harder for your body to fight off those pesky viruses during cold and flu season. Beyond that, it doesn't do your furnishings any favors, either -- it can lead to their drying and cracking. Humidifiers can help erase these concerns. The Kenmore 15408 humidifier gets top ranking in reviews as an energy-efficient humidifier for large areas measuring up to 1,700 square feet. Reviewers also have good things to say about the Air-O-Swiss Ultrasonic 7135 humidifier, which can quietly generate either warm or cool mist, making it handy for both summer and winter use. The Air-O-Swiss works effectively in rooms sized up to 650 square feet. You can read about these humidifiers and other well-reviewed models in our freshly-updated report. Read more
