Logitech K310 Washable Keyboard: We tried it!

Computer keyboards get no love.

We bang on them day in, day out. We paw them with grubby hands, eat and drink over them like they were place mats, and try not to think about how dirty they get. Maybe, if we're neat freaks, we'll clean them. But keyboards never seem to get really, truly clean -- too many nooks, crannies and crevices -- and much as we may want to, we can't (well, shouldn't) put them in the dishwasher or dunk them in the sink to give them a good scrubbing.

Until now.

A few weeks ago, we asked Logitech to send us one of their new K310 Washable Keyboard (*Est. $40). Logitech touts this peripheral as "the keyboard that loves a wash." But does the Logitech K310 keyboard really work? We decided to put one to the test and recorded the results on video, which you can watch here or on our YouTube channel. We'll have a full review of the Logitech K310 when we update our report on computer keyboards in the coming months, but in the meantime, watch and enjoy! Read more

How NOT to clean your computer keyboard

Chances are, your computer keyboard is filthy, the keys a magnet for the dirt and oil on your fingertips, the crumbs from that afternoon snack you had at your desk, the gunk that floats through the air, whatever. Moreover, all of those little nooks and crannies are the perfect hiding place for dirt and grit. Given how dirty our hands and fingers can get during the course of an average day, it's no surprise that researchers say computer keyboards can be a haven for bacteria.

One way NOT to clean your keyboard is to grab a disinfecting wipe, saturated with cleaning fluid, and scrub the keys. You'll get those keys clean, but the excess fluid will drip into the keyboard's electronics and likely short out some or all the connections. We know that from firsthand experience.

So, how do you clean your computer keyboard the right -- and wrong -- way? Read on...

Upgrading your computer keyboard can add comfort, functionality

If your computer needs a refresh, but you're not ready to buy a new one, replacing the keyboard is an easy upgrade. Standalone keyboards are often more comfortable and reliable than those bundled with desktop PCs. Logitech continues to dominate reviews with top-performing keyboards in the gaming, media center, and budget categories. Meanwhile, Saitek's Eclipse II continues its reign as the best general-purpose keyboard.

Most reviewers concur that the illuminated Saitek Eclipse II (*Est. $50) is an excellent general-purpose keyboard. The Eclipse II offers many color options for illumination, a variable dimmer option and a cluster of multimedia buttons to control volume and to play and pause music tracks.

Those on a budget can grab a wireless keyboard for just 25 bucks. The HP Wireless Elite Keyboard (*Est. $25) is an excellent value because, unlike nearly all other budget keyboards, it offers wireless connectivity. It also takes up very little desktop space due to its slim design. Users on Amazon.com and Newegg.com praise its comfort and clean look, although a few complain of build quality issues.
