If having a loved one unwrap a two-wheeler is part of your gift giving this holiday season, skip the chain sporting goods or big box stores. The bikes littering the pages of Black Friday flyers may seem a good idea, but they aren't. Simply, you cannot expect to find the same quality product or service in these featured brands as you might in smaller specialized shops.

Balance bikes vs. training wheels: Where do you stand?


Like many kids, I have fond memories of my first two-wheeled bike, a pink-and-white Barbie extravaganza complete with streamers and a nifty little bell that I rang incessantly. The white training wheels were a little wobbly, but they gave me enough confidence to pedal around the block. Training wheels are often seen as the first step in learning how to ride a bike, but the exploding popularity of balance bikes promises to shake up that tradition.

Also known as running or push bikes, balance bikes are designed for toddlers ages 2 to 5. They have no pedals and low seats, so kids propel themselves forward with their feet and lift up their feet to glide. Fisher-Price recalls a gazillion toys and baby gear


Fisher-Price and the Consumer Products Safety Commission today announced the recall of more than 10 million toys, play centers, tricycles and high chairs due to a wide variety of problems. Here's a rundown of what's affected, and what you should do if you own a recalled item. You'll need to check each product in order to decide what to do. With some items, Fisher-Price will send you a repair kit. For others , however, Fisher-Price will send you a comparable replacement product. The dates are particularly important. For example, Fisher-Price sold Healthy Care high chairs for more than seven years, but kept tweaking the design along the way. As a result, only Healthy Care chairs manufacturered prior to 2008 are involved in the recall. Read more

Three-wheelin'! Check out these Black Friday deals on tricycles


Considering a tricycle for your little one this holiday season? Wal-Mart and Toys "R" Us are offering Black Friday deals on two Radio Flyer models.

The Radio Flyer Big Flyer (shown), normally $50, is marked down to $30 at Wal-Mart. The Radio Flyer Classic 12" Tricycle, originally $70, is on sale for at Toys R Us for $50.

So, which bike is right for your child? You might want to read our report on kids' bikes before purchasing a tricycle at a big-box store. Experts actually recommend buying bicycles at professional bike shops, where knowledgeable employees can find the bike that's right for your child. The bicycles sold at big-box stores tend to be lower in quality and may be set up incorrectly.
