Recall recap: Dry pet food, SONIC toothbrushes, BMW 3-Series, plus Chrysler 300s and Dodge Caravans

A slew of recalls this week caution that what affects our pets can also affect us. Several high-end dry dog food brands joined an ever-expanding recall list because of possible salmonella contamination. And our pets aren't the only ones at risk. Humans who come into contact with the contaminated food can get sick, too. Experts advise to always wash your hands properly after feeding your pet, clean surfaces that came into contact with pet food, never allow children under 5 to feed animals, and be sure to keep little ones away from the pet food bowl lest they decide to munch on some kibble.

Bulli for you! New VW concept taps Microbus mystique

The original Volkswagen Type 2 (or Transporter), commonly known here in the U.S. as the Microbus, is beloved by many. Synonymous with the hippie movement of the 1960s, the bus can rightly be called an automotive icon, and the increasingly rare sight of one out on the road never fails to elicit a smile.

(Fun fact: Did you know that the Type 2 is still manufactured today? It's sold in Brazil as the Volkswagen Kombi.)

Now, while the original-style VW Transporter hasn't been available since 1979 (Brazil excepted), a concept car introduced today at the Geneva Motor Show hints at what a modern take on the Microbus could wind up looking like... if VW gives it the green light for production. It's called the Bulli.

Chrysler, EPA to collaborate on hydraulic hybrid system for minivan

Chrysler's going to start working on a hybrid minivan, but it's not what you might think. Earlier today, Chrysler Group CEO Sergio Marchionne and Environmental Protection Agency head Lisa Jackson held a press conference to announce that Chrysler and the EPA are collaborating to develop a hydraulic hybrid system to be piloted on a Chrysler minivan in 2012.

2011 Chrysler Town & Country minivan revealed with improvements

There's plenty of action in the minivan segment this year. The 2011 Toyota Sienna went on sale this summer; the 2011 Honda Odyssey, which we recently drove, arrives on September 30th; the all-new 2011 Nissan Quest will be formally unveiled in November (observant TV watchers have already seen it teased in Nissan's new television spot); and the 2011 Chrysler Town & Country goes on sale sometime in the fourth quarter of 2010. Speaking of the Chrysler minivan, photos (see them at our Facebook and Flickr pages) and details about the new-for-2011 changes were released today. Read on for the full skinny.

What's going on at the Geneva Motor Show?

The Geneva Motor Show (as in, Switzerland) kicked off today, meaning that the blogs and newswires are alive with buzz emanating from the massive exhibition. Thanks to the big time differential, Day 1's basically over now, so we can weigh in with a quick synopsis of some stuff you might actually find interesting, along with some links to sites where you can follow the show in much greater detail.

Nissan Quest minivan won't return for 2010

If a 2010 Nissan Quest was on your minivan shopping list, you'll want to reconsider. That's because Nissan has announced that there won't be a 2010 Nissan Quest. The 2009 Nissan Quest will continue to be produced at the company's Canton, Mississippi manufacturing facility until later this year, when Nissan will pull the plug on its U.S.-based minivan production altogether. (Canton will continue to produce the Nissan Titan pickup and Armada SUV.) But that's not the end of the story.

2011 Toyota Sienna minivan unveiled in Los Angeles

Toyota has just unveiled the 2011 Toyota Sienna minivan (pictured) at the Los Angeles auto show. It replaces the current best-reviewed model early next year. The 2011 Sienna is all new, and from the looks of things, Toyota's tried to make it all things to all families, with new styling, a reconfigured interior, two engine offerings, available all-wheel-drive (they're still the only ones to offer it in their minivan), and a fairly dizzying array of entertainment and convenience features. Basically, it's the kitchen-sink approach to delivering a family room on wheels.
