A sneak peak: the International Home and Housewares Show

Last week we attended the press preview for the International Home and Housewares Show. The show, which we will be attending (stayed tuned for blogs and video coverage), takes place in Chicago from March 10th-13th. At the preview we got a sneak peak of some interesting new product launches, below are a few noteworthy ones.

A "Post-It" moment for shovels: Craftsman improves a classic

Spade and shovel design hasn't changed in centuries, and once you own these tools, they generally last for years and years. But at last week's Craftsman lawn-and-garden preview in New York, these new tools struck me as a real improvement. The new tools, which will be available in spring 2012, have a bent-metal "pusher" built into each side of the shovel, giving you a place to put your foot (Craftsman is calling this feature the "Power Step").

Sure, in the end it's still a shovel, but the little platforms make it much easier to get leverage and push the shovel into the ground. It's not reinventing the wheel, but I thought this was a bit of a "Post-It' moment -- where you think "why didn't I think of that?" The tools will range in price from about $15 to $50, depending on the item.

First Drive: 2012 Toyota Camry

So, yesterday Toyota officially unveiled the 2012 Camry. Given that it's the best-selling car in America several years running, and that Toyota has moved 15 million of them worldwide since its introduction in 1983, the likelihood is you either own a Camry, have owned a Camry, or know someone who fits one of those descriptions. While the current 2011 Camry is an eminently practical car, it's a bore to look at inside and out, and it's not exactly exciting to drive. It seems Toyota grew tired of being a piñata for car reviewers to smack around in the face of more stylish and equally, if not more capable newcomers like the Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima. We know this because we got to drive the new Camry at Citi Field yesterday. It's impressive.

Toys for pampered dogs and cats

Ever wish you could play Angry Birds with your dog or cat? Or get a portrait of your beloved pet? Perhaps you're worried that your cat gets bored while you're at work or you're tired of losing dog toys at the lake. The solutions to all of these problems - and much more - were on display at the National Pet Home Décor Showcase in New York City. It was like no other trade show I've ever attended. Here's a taste of what we found - plus a photo gallery of the range of products available, from floating dog toys to catnip.

2012 Toyota Prius V: First Drive

The Toyota Prius is synonymous with hybrid cars and excellent fuel economy. No hybrid is recommended more in reviews, and at 50 mpg, Toyota's green-car icon is the most fuel-efficient vehicle you can buy without dipping your toe into the electric-vehicle pool. It's modern and roomy, but Toyota says it'd been hearing from Prius customers who wished for something more. Something bigger and even more practical, but still efficient -- still a Prius.  This fall, those folks get their wish in the form of the 2012 Toyota Prius V, a larger Prius crossover/wagon that will join the Prius hatchback in showrooms. We drove the new Prius V at an event organized by Toyota earlier this week.

Solar charging at GE with a Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid

It's like a regular Prius, only better. That, in a nutshell, sums up the Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid (aka Prius PHV). The example Toyota loaned us for a week is a prototype--the production version arrives next year and joins the growing Prius lineup. We requested the car because we were invited to the GE Energy headquarters in Plainville, CT for the opening of its new solar carport for EV charging. Since GE employees and visitors to the office would now have the ability to recharge electric vehicles during the day, we figured we might as well drive up in a car that could take advantage of the facility, too.

Trendspotting at NYC's Green Products Expo

From time to time, we at ConsumerSearch are invited to events that allow manufacturers big and small to showcase their goods to the press. At Wednesday's Green Products Expo in New York City, we didn't see too much that was groundbreaking, but a few products caught our eye. Will any of them end up in your home?

Fitness: What's New, Cool and Will Kick Your Butt

Last week I attended IHRSA, the International Health, Racquetball and Sportsclub Association international convention and trade show in San Francisco. This 30-year old gathering unveils fitness equipment that you will see in health clubs, and eventually on late-night infomercials or on exercise DVDs. Sometimes there are innovative products and group exercise classes to get excited about and sometimes it is more of the same. This year there were some notable new products that consumers will use either at home or in their gyms.

The good, the bad, the ugly: New infomercial gadgets

If there's one product category that we love covering at ConsumerSearch, it's As Seen On TV products. Here at the International Home and Housewares Show, we've found plenty of new and existing ASOTV products, some that seem legitimate and promising, others that probably are better left on the drawing board. We'll be posting new single-product reviews of some of these As Seen On TV goods in the coming months, but in the meantime, here is a rundown of just a few of the crazy gadgets and gizmos we've seen in Chicago.

Intl. Housewares Show: Will any of this stuff end up in your home?

Trade shows aren't just for cars and consumer electronics. Housewares are getting their due in Chicago at the 2011 International Home and Housewares Show, a three-day extravaganza of everything and anything you could possibly need (or not) for your house. Kitchen appliances are big, as are cookware, home organization and storage products, As Seen On TV gizmos, not to mention dishware and drinkware.

ConsumerSearch is attending, and we're posting live updates on Twitter and our Facebook page, along with photos of innovative products and wacky items that must be seen to be believed (Toilet Tattoos, anyone?). Having made the rounds of the cavernous McCormick Place convention center, we can say one thing with certainty: There is a LOT of stuff out there, but not necessarily a lot of NEW stuff. And the stuff that is new isn't necessarily ground-breaking. But a few things have caught our eye.
