What you need to know about the Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphone

Last night, Samsung held a splashy event at Radio City Music Hall for its latest smartphone, the Galaxy S4. Emceed by Broadway actor Will Chase, who like every New York actor has appeared on an episode of Law & Order, the event featured a number of theatrical sketches that demonstrated some of the S4's new features. Understated, it was not. While the press filled the theater, thousands were watching the livestream of the event on jumbotrons in Times Square and on YouTube. After the presentation, we had the opportunity to try out pre-production units. Here's what you need to know.

9 cool, strange and innovative mobile trends at #MWC13

Smartphones and tablets and phablets and apps; that's all that occupied my mind last week at the 2013 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, a tradeshow that attracted more than 72,000 visitors from over 200 countries. It was a busy several days, as multitudes of products were launched and myriad trends were spotted. We've already looked at what the Twitterverse took in; here's a sampling of what @MollyMobile saw. (At left are some cool cases and tablet keyboards from Belkin.) Read more

9 must-see tweets from the Mobile World Congress

Our personal technology editor Molly McLaughlin was one of 72,000 attendees (from over 200 countries!) on the floor in Barcelona this week at the 2013 Mobile World Congress. The premier event in mobile technology, this year's MWC featured more than 1,700 companies exhibiting their latest and greatest in personal electronics.  While Molly's Twitter account showcased many of the highlights of the event during the week, the Twitterverse was chock-full of #MWC13 tweets. These are the nine that mobile-conscious consumers must-see: Read more

All cars, all day at IMPA "Spring Brake"

Last week, I drove out to New York's Bear Mountain State park for the International Motor Press Association's (IMPA) "Spring Brake" event, at which a variety of manufacturers have a selection of cars and SUVs for IMPA members to sample throughout the day. The only bad thing about the event (which was blessed with ideal driving weather: warm temps and sunny skies), was that there were more cars on hand than there was time to sample every one. So I mixed it up, trying out rides that ranged from around $20,000 to well over $300,000. Read on for a quick take on each one.

While I was there, I also taped an appearance for Gary Gastelu's Fox Car Report on FoxNews.com, which you can watch below. Gary aptly describes the event as "speed dating for auto journalists." Can't say I disagree. Have a look and weigh in on the cars in the comments.

Live from the CTIA Wireless show in New Orleans

Smartphones smartphones smartphones. 4G! 4G! 4G! That about sums up CTIA's Wireless tradeshow. While there's not a whole lot of breaking news here, there's no shortage of great ideas. Visa and Mastercard were demo-ing their mobile payment systems (V.Me and PayPass) which aim to make online and in-person transactions just that much easier. Meanwhile, smartphones were in abundance - many of which are not yet available in the U.S. And most companies had big ideas for 4G. Here's a look at some of the interesting products I've seen - including some truly out there smartphone cases.  Read more

At the NY Auto Show, cars for going green or spending plenty of it

We had a video crew tag along with us at the New York Auto Show last week. You've already seen our chat with the COO of Terrafugia as she gave us the skinny on the company's Transition flying car.

In addition to that, we shot a couple of additional videos spotlighting the interesting green cars on display, ranging from the hot-selling new Toyota Prius C, to BMW's wild-looking i3 and i8 concepts to one of the coolest surprises we found down on the show's lower level, the new electric DeLorean (yes, you read that right).

Then we went and looked at cars on the more premium end of the scale. We check in on Land Rover's 25th anniversary in North America, climb into the awesome new Bentley Continental GTC V8 convertible, and find our inner Tony Stark as we marvel at the most unlikely, most luxurious vehicle of the whole show. It's all posted below. Read more

Terrafugia's flying car looks weird, but it's real

Cars that can fly have long been part of the national imagination. Popular Mechanics magazine says that the first of many flying-car references on its pages came in 1906. Jalopnik.com found the subject covered in 28 issues of Popular Science magazine spanning several decades. Hollywood has given us its versions in forms as varied as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the spinners in Blade Runner, the cars from The Fifth Element, and the animated future portrayed in The Jetsons

The stuff of fiction, however, is now reality (and, in fact, it has been for some time -- but more on that in a bit). Last week at the 2012 New York International Auto Show (which runs through April 15), we spoke to Anna Mracek Dietrich, the COO of Terrafugia, which has its Transition street-legal aircraft on display at the exhibition. The "flying car" moniker, while fun, seems like a bit of a stretch here. In person, the Transition looks like a single-engine Cessna and one of the Harley Earl-designed GM Firebird concept cars got mashed up in a Star Trek transporter accident. Sure, it flies and it drives just as advertised, but it's also far from conventional in appearance. Read more

Driving the 2013 Ford Police Interceptors

When it retired the venerated Panther rear-wheel drive platform last year, Ford lost more than the beloved Lincoln Town Car. Panther underpinned the Ford Crown Victoria, which, while discontinued for retail sale after model year 2007, continued to be produced in the all-important Police Interceptor configuration until last year, when Panther production finally ceased altogether.

To borrow a term that is used a little too cavalierly these days, it is entirely reasonable to call the Crown Vic an icon. For many, it and "police car" are interchangeable terms. Anyone who drives knows that sinking feeling you get when your rearview mirror fills with the visage of a Crown Vic wearing the telltale black grille. Suddenly, you discover the speed limit and hope you don't see red-and-blue lights. But with Ford's ubiquitous patrol car accepting the proverbial gold watch after decades of service, how would the automaker follow up? Earlier this week, we drove the two vehicles that will fill the Vic's very big shoes, the 2013 Ford Police Interceptor sedan and SUV. Read more

Will one of these products be the next Snuggie?

Think you've got the idea for the next Post-It? At this week's International Home and Housewares Show, I met a bunch of people that feel pretty certain they do. About 50 inventors manned small booths, pitching their ideas and prototypes to investors and retailers. Judges also scrutinized the gadgets, naming several products as award winners. Here's a sampling of items you might soon see in a store near you, and a bit about the people behind the ideas. Read more

Shall we dance? Tangerine Tango is the color of the year

Each year, Pantone -- a company that maintains a database of standard colors for graphic designers, interior decorators and fashion designers -- names a color of the year. Then manufacturers and designers run with it, and sure enough we start seeing all sorts of items in that color. For 2012, it's Tangerine Tango, otherwise known as Pantone #18-2120. Says executive director Leatrice Eisenman: "Reminiscent of the radiant shadings of a sunset, Tangerine Tango marries the vivaciousness and adrenaline rush of red with the friendliness and warmth of yellow, to form a high-visibility, magnetic hue that emanates heat and energy."
