Aw, nuts: Peanut butter prices soaring

Forget the crunchy or creamy debate; would you rather your peanut butter cost you an arm or a leg?

Just like many other crops, the peanut harvest was affected by the bizarre weather of this past summer. Due to the extremely high temperatures, the crop of Runner peanuts (the kind most used in peanut butter) has been devastated, causing the price of the raw peanuts to more than double. A fresh look at the best peanut butter

We haven't updated our report on the best peanut butter in more than two years, so we decided to take another look at what the critics have to say. The top sources we consulted for our report in 2007-- Cook's Illustrated, Food and Wine magazine, ConsumerReports.org and SeriousEats.com -- haven't updated their reviews. But we found a couple of newer peanut butter reviews, among them Cooking Light and Real Simple magazines, Slashfood.com and the enthusiast website PeanutButterBoy.com. None of these sources are overly critical (although Slashfood.com does nominate a worst peanut butter), nor do they discuss testing methodology in detail. Instead, results seem to be based primarily on taste tests, which are highly subjective.
