Our informal "weird iPhone app" poll yielded a lot of games and novelties, ranging from a driving bear, to a surgeon armed with a pizza cutter, to some rather creative musical instruments (Pocket Sitar, Fart Piano). Just about everyone I asked has some form of lightsaber app. Celebrities from Sam Jackson to Lady Gaga have their own apps. And then there's the headscratchers such as Ask the Hoff and Blower. My favorite? Hands down, A Rotary Phone! (Oh, and RubberDuck.)

For starters, the About guide to graphic software recently reviewed the Jackson Pollock app (99 cents) that basically lets you create Pollock-style paintings on your iPhone. Sue calls it "simple, yet delightful" and "freeing," though she does point out that it's easy to inadvertently erase your painting with a slight shake of the phone. Here's what everyone else had to say.

Worth the download:

  • Enviro-Bear 2010 ($0.99). "Funkonaut" says "I never thought driving a car as a bear using just one arm would be so much fun!" Be sure to check out the "amazing" graphics.
  • Falling Balls (Free). Its name says it all. Commenter Rick lauds its cheap graphics, and says it's addictive and fun, despite its simplicity.
  • Scanner 911 ($0.99). Submitted by ConsumerSearch Autos editor Alex Nunez, who enjoys listening to this live police radio. "LA and Detroit are very active," he says.
  • Amateur Surgeon ($2.99). Austin Smith, our new Director of Technology, recommends this gory game, brought to you by Adult Swim. It features a pizza delivery guy/amateur surgeon wielding a pizza cutter and using it like a scalpel.
  • iSamJackson ($0.99). Patrick Norton kicks things off with a demonstration of this attitude-filled app in Revision3's compilation of best and worst celebrity apps. Why wouldn't you download this? Also featured: the aforementioned Ask the Hoff app.
Just plain wacky:
