Ice cream, or some version of it, has been around since the second century B.C., according to the International Dairy Foods Association. With a history that stretches that far back into time, it isn't surprising that today about a billion and a half gallons of ice cream are produced each year. With the heat of summer upon us, we thought there was no better time then now to delve into the greatness of ice cream.
We already cover best commercial ice cream brands and ice cream scoops. Plus, for those who want to make their own ice cream, we have a report on the top ice cream makers. But since we all do "scream for ice cream," we wanted to discover more than that: so we bring you six unique ice cream gadgets, each with their own distinctive flavor and charm. Happy scooping!
Tired of people raiding your stash of ice cream? The Euphori Lock (*Est. $6.64) protects a pint of ice cream with a combination lock that will keep everyone but the combination holder out. While a determined ice cream thief might be able to rip the carton apart to get to your Cherry Garcia, the lock will deter most would-be ice cream raiders. The plastic security ring comes in two parts that snap together over the top of the ice cream, securing the lid until the “super secret” three-digit combination is entered.
A big scoop of refreshing ice cream on a hot summer day is a treat to look forward to, until that moment when you take the first lick and the ice cream flops off the top of the cone and lands on the ground. Cuisipro has solved that problem with their Ice Cream Scoop and Stack (*Est. $17.00). The Scoop and Stack creates the perfect size scoop of ice cream to sit inside a regular cone. The scoop is shaped like a cylinder and the top is flat, which makes the shape of the ice cream solid instead of unbalanced, even when scoops are stacked on top of one another. Push the scoop into the ice cream container, twist and lift. Release the ice cream with the push of a button. The scoop is dishwasher safe and comes with a pink, green or white handle.
The Zoku Quick Pop Maker(*Est. $49.99) allows you to make individual ice cream pops in about seven minutes. The gadget makes three ice cream pops at a time and you can use it about three times before you need to refreeze. It comes with reusable Popsicle sticks and drop guards. Cast-aluminum freezes the pops uniformly. This is a great summertime treat for a family picnic or when the kids have guests. One drawback to note, however, is that the mold must be in the freezer for about 24 hours and then only makes nine popsicles. It is great for a small number of people, but for larger families, more than one may be needed.
Hate trying to dish out hard, frozen ice cream? Oneida’s Twister Ice Cream Scoop (*Est. $9.99) offers a unique edge to cut through even the most stubborn ice cream. The end is pointed and will pierce hard ice cream and the edge has an “auger design” that twists down and scoops out a round glob. Dishwasher safe, the scoop itself is made of heavy-duty, polished aluminum and the hand is a hard plastic
Do you love ice cream sandwiches, but don’t love the supermarket price for them? Tovolo’s Ice Cream Sandwich Molds (*Est. 11.99/set of 3) make ice cream sandwiches in the shape of a star, heart or what they call a “squircle,” which isn’t quite a circle and isn’t quite a square (pictured above). The cookie cutter part of the mold has a design that can be pressed into the cookie. Simply stack the cookie, ice cream and another cookie, and then press the mold down. The large knob on top makes pulling the mold loose from the cookie a cinch. Consumers on Amazon.com gave them four stars because of features like breaking into three pieces for easy cleaning and being dishwasher safe.
There is no longer a need to rotate your cone to avoid drips, because the Motorized Ice Cream Cone (*Est. $9.99)will do all the work for you. The cone is made of plastic and has a small dish that sits inside and also comes apart for easy cleaning. Simply scoop the ice cream into the dish and push the button to make it spin. The removable dish can be placed in the dishwasher.
