Low priced TVs for the holidays

If you're wondering just how low LCD TV prices are going to drop this holiday shopping season, the answer could be, "Very." iSuppli, a market research company focused on the electronics industry, says that we could see some real bargains. For instance, premium-brand 32-inch LCD TVs might be found on Black Friday for just under $300, while select big-name 42-inch LCD TVs could potentially be snared for just under $500. That follows the ongoing trend of sharply-declining LCD TV prices over the last year.

For shoppers looking at higher-end models, sets with LED backlights are rising in popularity. This is partly driven by falling prices, of course, but also by aspects such as newer sets' lower energy consumption. While expensive LED-backlit TVs are currently available, iSuppli notes that prices are now dropping below $1,500 for some 42-inch LCD TVs that are so equipped. High-refresh-rate LCD televisions are said to reduce motion blur, though some experts aren't so sure you can see any difference when watching TV programs. These sets are coming down in price as well, with iSuppli saying you could find some 46- or 47-inch 120 Hz LCD TVs selling for under $1,000 on Black Friday and throughout the shopping season.

The bottom line is that this Christmas could turn out to be a very merry one for shoppers looking to score a new HDTV at a great price, and a not-too-bad one for TV manufacturers and retailers looking for a bit of cheer to end what's been a tough year.
