Click quick! Holiday shipping cut-offs are coming

We Americans are so pro-procrastination there's actually a "holiday" for it. Oh yeah, nearly 1,000 retailers are expected to participate in "Free Shipping Day" on December, 17. Teasers suggest it may actually be in your favor to hold out for Free Shipping Day, as participating merchants will feature free shipping by Christmas Eve and "other discounts."

However, all the offers won't be revealed until midnight on the 17th. The FAQ page at the Free Shipping Day website reveals some retailers may have minimums for free shipping while others may not even reveal that they're offering free shipping until the day of. With the deals hidden until the last minute, we checked with a few major retailers to see what shipping details they are publishing.

Note: Some shipping offers may not apply to large, bulky, or high-demand items. Most offers apply to the continental United States only. Where retailers did not offer their holiday shipping deadline, we made our best guess based on their listed delivery times--double-check before placing your order, though. Read more

Which is better: A treadmill or an elliptical trainer?

At first glance, the differences between elliptical trainers and treadmills may seem purely aesthetic: Would you rather walk and run on a moving belt or pedal in place? But there are quite a few subtle differences between these exercise machines. Here's how to decide which is best for you:

Gear that grows with your baby

New parents can spend $9,050 to $20,460 on their baby's first year alone, according to the USDA. It's enough to make you scale back your family plans. But you can save money by buying gear that morphs as your baby grows. Initially, convertible baby products may seem more expensive, but, over time, they can take less of a toll on your wallet, not to mention the environment, because you won't need to start from scratch with a completely new product as your child goes from stage to stage or if you have a second child close to your first.

Here are four mega multi-taskers that can grow the distance with your family. Read more

Recall recap: Sportspower Trampolines; Kirkland Signature Saute Pans; and Harbor Freight Tools Cordless Drills

Topping the list for worrisome recall news, Sportspower Trampolines sold exclusively at Sports Authority from April 2007 to May 2012 earned the "please go out and check immediately" award: The trampoline's metal legs can puncture the jumping area, posing a serious laceration hazard to users. Sportspower is aware of one incident where the metal legs punctured the jumping area, but, fortunately, no injuries reported so far.

Two products that experience heavy household use were also the subject of recalls this week. Some 13,000 Kirkland Signature Sauté Pans were recalled because the glass lid can shatter, posing a laceration hazard. And Harbor Freight Tools recalled 108,000 cordless drills because they pose a fire and burn hazard to the user, not something you want to happen during a DIY project. Read more

The Nintendo Wii U starts out strong, but faces an uncertain future

In the midst of last week's Black Friday week hubbub, Nintendo launched its new Wii U video game console. To say there was a bit of pent up demand would be an understatement. Originally announced at the E3 show in June 2011, anticipation for first completely new video game console since 2006 had built to the point where the Wii U was sold out through normal retail channels on its release date (November 18), with USA Today adding that a total of 400,000 units were sold in the first week. But despite some predictions of possible months-long Wii U shortages, some retailers, such as ToysRUs.com, were showing that  the Wii U Basic set (*Est. $300) was in stock for immediate shipping as of Tuesday afternoon. The better value, we think, Wii U Deluxe set (*Est. $350) looked to be available at some Walmart stores (but only in stores, not on line). That suggests that supplies are loosening up faster than anticipated. That's good news for you as it means you might still be able to score a Wii U console for the holidays -- and without paying the marked up prices some secondary retailers are charging. But it could signal bad news for Nintendo and the future of video game consoles. Read more

Newest booster seats focused on safety first

Car seats aren't just for babies anymore. The NHTSA says all children should be in booster seats until at least age 8. Manufacturers are stepping up, making seats look less babyish for children ages 4 to 8 with mod patterns, bold primary colors, and other designs. But safety isn't taking a backseat to aesthetics when it comes to the newest child booster seats on the market.

Fifteen of the 17 booster seats introduced in 2012 earned the top BEST BET rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.  The IIHS defines BEST BETs as "seats that provide good belt fit for typical 4 to 8 year-olds in almost any car, minivan or SUV."

A few of this year's winners are also ConsumerSearch Best Reviewed convertible car seats and booster models. Read more

Recall recap: PeaPod Travel Tents; Toyota Prius; VW Beetle; and Kawasaki Lawn Motors

Traveling near and far this holiday season could get a little troublesome if you own one of the vehicles or products on this week's recall list. Toyota recalled nearly 670,000 2004-2009 model year Prius vehicles because of issues with both the steering gear and water pump coil could pose a crash risk. Toyota also recalled some 11,000 2012-2013 Scion/IQs because air bag issues pose an injury risk. And if you plan to whip out a PeaPod Travel Tent for your little ones while on the road, you need a back up plan. KidCo recalled about 220,000 of these tented beds because they're a suffocation hazard to children.

Shop smart: Shop small

With so many big box stores attracting the deal-crazed crowds on Black Friday and the pajama shoppers flocking to deal sites on Cyber Monday, American Express saw a void in shopping incentives for businesses on Main Street America. In 2010, the credit card company started a marketing initiative to help the economy and support mom-and-pops. Small Business Saturday, as it's been coined, was a huge success and had a repeat performance last year. There is no shortage of success stories from participating small businesses that look forward to this year's event on Saturday, November 24. Read more

The best Black Friday bicycle deals

If having a loved one unwrap a two-wheeler is part of your gift giving this holiday season, skip the chain sporting goods or big box stores.
