GM hopes 2011 Chevy Cruze is answer to Civic, Corolla


Auto show season is here (the 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show kicks off tomorrow), and that means that we can expect a stream of new-vehicle announcements and unveilings right through next spring. General Motors will formally debut the 2011 Chevy Cruze tomorrow in L.A. -- an economy car it hopes will be a solid competitor and alternative to longtime reviewer favorites such as the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla.

Buying American: tough but not impossible


In a recent ConsumerSearch poll of 1,200 readers, we asked about buying American-made goods: 67% said they were trying to buy more American-made products or would like to buy them if they were easier to find. And that's the problem, really -- finding them. Fine print: Holiday free-shipping deals vary widely


December 20 is this year's drop-dead date for on-time holiday shipping, but if you want to take advantage of free shipping offered by some online retailers, you need to act faster than that. We've looked at this year's free-shipping offers and thrown them into a chart for your reference. In addition, hundreds of retailers are participating in Free Shipping Day on December 17, so if you order on that day, you can take advantage of free shipping and on-time standard delivery. The catch is that you have to order on that day.

iPhone users willing to pay for more digital content, survey says


In a survey released this week by media law firm Olswang, iPhone users say they are prepared to spend more for exclusive digital content. As reported on 9to5Mac.com, 58% of survey respondents said they would pay to access a just-released movie on their mobile devices. But among iPhone owners, that figure jumps to 73%. There's a similar split for TV. While 30% of those surveyed expressed interest in buying a subscription to a TV show they like, 41% of iPhone owners say they'd be interested. In the same vein, iPhone owners were more receptive to paying for mobile access to magazines and newspapers.

Salvation Army kettles: Cash or credit?


An old fashioned icon goes modern: Salvation Army bell ringers aren't just looking for spare change. Now they can  let you charge it. As reported on Consumerist.org, some kettles now have a card swiper next to them. A test program in Dallas and Denver last year was a success, so now 120 other cities will get the modern kettles. Is the Warner DVD to Blu-ray Disc swap offer a good deal?


Warner Brothers, the studio that gave Blu-ray the final boost it needed to make it the de facto standard for high-def discs, is giving the format another bump with a program aimed at cutting the cost of switching over from DVD to Blu-ray. DVD2Blu lets owners of certain Warner Brothers DVDs swap them at relatively low cost for Blu-ray Discs of the same title. The swapped-for Blu-rays cost either $7.95 or $9.95, depending on the movie, and shipping is free if you spend $25 or more for the upgraded discs. But before you get too excited, let's step back for a second and see how good a deal this really is.
