Choosing the best kitchen shears is easy

Kitchen shears are a handy, versatile tool to have on hand, great for tasks like butterflying or trimming the fat off of chicken breasts, chopping up sun-dried tomatoes or herbs, and opening tough food packages.

There are several good sources that review kitchen shears. The best, which use hands-on testing to assess performance, include Cook's Illustrated and Australian consumer publication Choice (both of which require subscriptions to read the reviews).

In a Good Housekeeping review, editors note that while a garment steamers can be an alternative to traditional steam irons, the steamers struggle with "sharp creases and stiff fabrics, like dress shirts."

Baby Einstein: Harmless fun or a broken promise?

Own any Baby Einstein DVDs? Unhappy that your child isn't smarter as a result? Well, now you can get your money back. Depending on which articles you read, the refund offer -- which has been available since September but was only splashed around in the media this week -- is either a hangdog admission of fraudulent marketing or the result of a one-woman smear campaign against Disney, the parent company of Baby Einstein.

Can a shoe really help firm-up your backside?

Touted as a "gym-free" way to trim down, sales for Skechers Shape-Ups continue to soar. In fact, earlier this year, the company even launched a men's and more conservative work-shoe line. So what's the real scoop on these shoes?

Clear a path with the best snow blowers

In some parts of the country, Old Man Winter has already begun dumping snow on the population. Why subsidize your chiropractor's new Mercedes by breaking out the old shovel when you can let a machine do most of the hard work? A pair of Toro single-stage snow blowers -- the gas-powered Power Clear 210R 38587 and electric 1800 Power Curve -- gets the best reviews overall. The Troy-Bilt Storm 3090 XP 31AH55Q5711 two-stage blower is top-rated as well, while the Craftsman 88957 gas blower gets the nod as a good value choice. Gas snow blowers are the most powerful, but if you live in a region that gets only light snowfalls, an electric snow blower may do the trick, and it'll require a lot less maintenance, too. Check out the latest reviews in our freshly-updated report. Read more
