The trouble with radar jammers

As we note in our updated report on radar detectors, there's a bit of an outlaw mentality associated with these devices, which most people buy to avoid speeding tickets (despite manufacturer claims to the contrary). Among the more dubious devices we found are radar jammers sold by Rocky Mountain Radar. The problem is that it's a federal felony to attempt to jam police radar. In 2007, The Federal Communications Commission cited Rocky Mountain Radar for selling illegal devices, but they're still for sale at Amazon.com and other mainstream retailers. Ten years earlier, in 1997, Rocky Mountain Radar earned some bad press for its Phazer radar scrambler; reviews by both CBS News and ABC's 20/20 suggested that the Phazer simply didn't work.

A hot-looking, high-performing sports car isn't some unattainable dream, experts say. After all, the excellent new Nissan 370Z is priced like a family sedan. Reviewers say the Z car has matured since its previous incarnation, the 350Z, boasting markedly improved performance, a better-quality interior, voluptuous lines, and sharper handling. A rev-matching feature available for manual gearbox-equipped cars lets anyone make perfect downshifts like a race driver every single time. But the Z isn't the only sports car drawing raves from the experts...

For holiday deals, starting planning now

According to an article in today's USA Today, this year's holiday shopping season is shaping up to be vastly different from 2008's last-minute discount free-for-all. According to Jayne O'Donnell's article, retailers will be taking a more measured approach. Instead of deep December sales, stores will be offering earlier, less drastic deals. So even though it's not even officially autumn yet, savvy shoppers should start thinking sooner rather than later about Santa.

Pampered Toes or painful toes?

The over-dramatized commercial for Pampered Toes claims they're the miracle solution for tired, aching feet. Pampered Toes are made of a flexible gel that's said to a deliver a cool, soothing sensation to tired toes. The individual toe compartments are intended to give cramped feet a stretch.

But do Pampered Toes really relieve foot pain? Your intrepid ConsumerSearch editorial team decided to try them ourselves. User reviews seemed to indicate that those with larger feet liked them better than those with smaller feet, but in the end, we weren't so sure.

Sony PS3 loses its Blu-ray crown

Reviewers have begun to weigh in on the Sony PS3 Slim's prowess as a Blu-ray player. While the new $299 price has helped re-establish the console as a great value -- especially for those interested in its game-playing abilities -- performance tests reveal some shortcomings. To be sure, tons of pluses remain, and the PS3 Slim remains a very capable Blu-ray spinner. However, if your only interest is in playing back Blu-ray discs, we think that some standalone players deserve serious consideration as well.

Gear up for fall camping with the best camping stoves

Camping stoves vary in size from big three-burner propane stoves, useful for car camping, to pocket-sized backpacking stoves that weigh 3 ounces or less. Backpacking stoves are recommended for hiking trips and whenever you need to carry your stove with you. The bigger stoves are obviously limited to the campground, since you won't want to add 20 pounds to your pack load.

Intuit acquires competitor Mint.com for $170 million

What a summer it's been. Since we published our new report on Personal Finance Sites in May, our top pick, Mint.com has undergone a number of changes, regularly piling on new features and winning accolades from reviewers, most of whom prefer it over competitor Intuit's Quicken Online. That competition is about to come to a screeching halt, however, as Mint.com has been acquired by Intuit for $170 million, as confirmed by Mint.com CEO Aaron Patzer at the TechCrunch50 event this month. Mint.com received a $50,000 award when it launched two years ago at TechCrunch40, a competition that pits start-ups against one another. Patzer will join Intuit as GM of the company's Personal Finance group, which includes Quicken and Quicken Online.

Samsonite X-Lite luggage: Iffy durability in reviews

Among the many brands and models of luggage ConsumerSearch reviewed for our full report on luggage, one stood out -- and not in a good way. Although Samsonite has earned a reputation for durable luggage in the past (check out this wacky commercial from the '70s, where luggage is trampled by a marching band), reviewers say its Samsonite Black Label X-Lite line doesn't measure up.
