The Omron 10 Series BP785 upper-arm blood pressure monitor balances advanced features with a relatively low price. Its ComFit cuff is easy to use and combines the range of at least two "normal" cuffs. Its automatic calibration feature double-checks readings to ensure accuracy, and the monitor can also calculate the average of three consecutive readings. This model uses a positioning icon to signal whether it's applied correctly, although this feature doesn't always work perfectly in independent tests.
Comes with a high learning curve. Researchers with a leading consumer advocacy organization give the Omron 10 Series BP785 blood pressure monitor an Excellent rating for accuracy. The majority of owners agree, saying it gives quick, accurate readings -- once you've mastered the learning curve that comes with its many features. However, we also found a healthy number of complaints about wildly inaccurate readings when compared against a doctor's equipment. The BP785 flashes an "okay" symbol to let you know you've got the cuff properly positioned -- the key to getting accurate readings -- but will still provide a reading even if you don't have the cuff quite right, which can cause confusion.
One size fits most. The Omron BP785's ComFit cuff accommodates arm circumferences of 9 to 17 inches (23 to 43 cm), and although many users say it's a challenge to adjust on your own arm, they also say its semi-rigid design allows you to just slip your arm in and out of the (un-inflated) cuff once you've got it adjusted correctly.
The Omron BP785's large, bright digital display is very easy to read -- however, with so many features to master, reading the manual is an absolute must. The BP785 also goes through AA batteries (four at a time) very quickly if you don't use the AC adapter.
Almost all the bells and whistles. The Omron 10 Series BP785 blood pressure cuff comes with an impressive array of features. These include a built-in calibration check system; a TruRead mode that takes three consecutive readings one minute apart and displays the average; two user accounts, with 100-reading storage for each; an irregular heartbeat detector; and it shows up to an eight-week history of average morning and evening blood pressures. About the only feature it lacks is a USB port for downloading stored data to a computer. The entire package is covered by a limited five-year warranty. Some users warn that Omron's customer service is so-so -- generally responsive, but not always helpful.
