Omron HEM-780

Blood pressure monitor with advanced features

Pros
  • Highly accurate
  • 200-reading memory with date and time
  • Detects irregular heartbeat
  • Five-year warranty
Cons
  • Expensive
  • Some reports of broken units

The Omron HEM-780 is a full-featured automatic blood pressure monitor with a cuff designed for medium to large (9-inch to 17-inch) arms. The ComFit cuff is made of a slightly stiff material and preformed to make it easier to put on without assistance. It includes an AC adapter. The memory stores 100 readings each for two users -- a plus for couples -- with date and time stamps, which can be useful for detecting patterns in blood pressure fluctuations. This model also alerts users when an irregular heartbeat or morning hypertension is detected. In tests, the Omron is a top performer, and users posting reviews to retailer websites give it high marks, although some are less than impressed with the ComFit cuff. If you prefer a standard blood pressure cuff, the A&D Medical LifeSource UA-787EJ (*Est. $60) is less expensive.

ConsumerReports.org includes the Omron HEM-780 in its most recent roundup of blood pressure monitors. We also found more than 1,000 user reviews at Amazon.com and several detailed reviews at Epinions.com.
