December 2008. While there are a host of entry-level Blu-ray players with similar features and similar prices, the Panasonic DMP-BD35K offers some significant pluses, experts say. For one thing, it does a better job upscaling standard-definition DVDs than many other Blu-ray players. It also includes built in decoders for both Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA, and can stream those formats as well. About the only feature missing is multichannel analog audio outputs; you'll have to step up to this player's also well regarded big brother -- the Panasonic DMP-BD55K (*discontinued) -- for that, but this player otherwise delivers the same level of video and audio excellence. The less expensive Sony BDP-S350 lacks a decoder for DTS-HD MA, but is otherwise similar. Blu-ray picture quality is first-rate, but while some say DVD performance is as well, others aren't so sure.

There aren't many professional reviews for the Panasonic DMP-BD35K, but what's available is very good. Those include a nicely detailed write-up at CNET, one of the most prolific reviewers of Blu-ray players, and a nearly as detailed report from across the pond at Britain's TrustedReviews.com. A review at HomeTheaterReview.com is not nearly as helpful. User opinions can be read at Amazon.com.

Our Sources

1. CNET

CNET subjects the Panasonic DMP-BD35K to a thorough round of bench and real-world testing and comes away completely impressed. The site awards the player its Editors' Choice award, beating out both the step-up Panasonic DMP-BD55K and Sony PlayStation 3 for that honor.

2. TrustedReviews.com

While there are some technical differences between Blu-ray players sold in the U.S. and elsewhere, the conclusions reached in this well done review at a British site are useful and valid. Danny Phillips is less impressed by DVD playback than some others, but still grants the player the site's Recommended award.

3. Amazon.com

Nearly 30 users have weighed in on the Panasonic DMP-BD35K Blu-ray player and nearly all are pleased. Slow loading and response times are the chief complaint of those who give the player lower grades.

4. HomeTheaterReview.com

This report on the DMP-BD35K falls short of the ideal because more time is spent on features and specifications than actual performance. Image quality and player performance are complimented, but there's no evidence provided as to why.
