Plantronics Voyager Pro

Pros
  • Excellent noise-canceling technology
  • Comfortable
  • Good battery life
Cons
  • So-so wind reduction
  • Bulky design
  • Obtrusive look

Reviewers agree that the Plantronics Voyager Pro Bluetooth headset does an outstanding job of canceling ambient noise, outperforming much of the competition. The Aliph Jawbone Icon (*Est. $40) is more effective at blocking out wind, but the Voyager Pro beeps to alert you when wind is interfering with a conversation so you can turn your head away from it. Battery tests at PCMag.com yield a decent six and a half hours of talk time. Though comfortable, the Voyager Pro has a bulky battery housing that hangs over your ear and a boom microphone that some say makes you look like an operator. A smaller and more stylish option is the Jawbone Icon.

Review sites that focus on the newest gadgets, such as CNET, give a comprehensive review of the Plantronics Voyager Pro Bluetooth headset. PC World includes it in a roundup of 10 Bluetooth headsets, and Laptop Magazine provides good feedback. There are a large number of user reviews on Amazon.com, which give some useful input from owners.

1. CNET

Nicole Lee gives the Plantronics Voyager Pro Bluetooth headset an Editors' Choice award for effectively blocking out noise in several different environments. She says the bulky, obtrusive shape "won't win any design awards," but its stellar performance makes it worth the money.

2. PCMag.com

The Plantronics Voyager Pro gets an Editors' Choice award here. Though Sascha Segan says the Voyager Pro is comfortable for long conversations and delivers superb sound quality, but it "doesn't win any points for style." Wind blocking, however, is better on the Aliph Jawbone Prime, he says.

3. PC World

Editor Aoife McEvoy describes the sound quality of the Plantronics Voyager Pro as "consistently splendid." McEvoy says it performs well in windy conditions, but fit is fussy, and some of the buttons take getting used to.

4. Laptop Magazine

Editor Dana Wollman points out that the Plantronics Voyager Pro sometimes has clearer sound and blocks background noise better than the Aliph Jawbone Prime, but in the end the latter model earns Laptop Magazine's Editor's Choice award. The Plantronics Voyager Pro is praised for its comfort, but rated lower for its large size.

5. Amazon.com

Most users who've provided input on the Plantronics Voyager Pro agree with professional reviewers that sound quality and noise cancellation are stellar, but some say it looks like something out of "Star Trek." Some users with beards note that the windscreen can catch on facial hair.
