A high price tag does not always mean a product is the best. And beauty expert and founder of Beautypedia.com Paula Beguon spares no punches and gets straight to this point in her review: "You absolutely don't need to spend this much money for a well-formulated body moisturizer --there are brilliant ones for a fraction of the cost." To top that off, she adds that the jar packaging causes ingredients like antioxidants to break down when exposed to air, and chemical fragrances in this formula may cause irritation. Expense seems to be the maincriticism of La Mer The Body Crme. Even positive reviews of this product note its exorbitant price and other reviewers may like it but feel that drugstore brands are just as effective for a fraction of the cost.
While Beguon's review on Beautypedia.com is the most in depth, both BellaSugar.com and Allure magazine have tested La Mer The Body Crme. The former's reviewer liked the cream but offered a drugstore alternative, while Allure magazine included La Mer The Body Crme on its list of "Best Splurges." However, savvy buyers will probably wonder what makes a worthwhile "splurge". If the product was worth the price, why wasn't it named the best on the regular Best of Beauty list? Allure's review doesn't offer an answer to that question.

Beguon gives La Mer The Body Crme a low score of Average/Overpriced, meaning that the product may work, but it does not merit the high price. According to Beguon: "You absolutely don't need to spend this much money for a well-formulated body moisturizer -- there are brilliant ones for a fraction of the cost." She adds that buyers should avoid the 10 oz. jar packaging, as this container doesn't keep the more finicky ingredients stable once they've been exposed to air. Beguon also says that the formula includes chemical fragrances known to cause irritation.
Review: The Body Crme by La Mer, Paula Beguon, Nov. 22, 2010
Editors of Allure magazine spend months testing thousands of beauty products for their annual beauty awards. While reviews of many products are very helpful, reviews on the "Best Splurges" are often difficult to decipher. It's unclear who picked them, whether they're actually any better than the products on the non-splurge list and how many products were considered in what categories. Allure editors offer only a one-sentence review of the product, stating only that they can "grasp why some celebs practically bathe in La Mer."
Review: The Best Splurges, Meirav Devash, October 2010
Editors of BellaSugar.com, a beauty blog, describe La Mer The Body Crme as fabulous, but pricey. The reviewer says that she might not have the money to buy the high-end product for herself, but recommends it for "anyone who's got cash to burn." She recommends St. Ives Collagen Elastin Body Moisturizer as a less expensive alternative for the rest of us.
