The Zojirushi BBCC-X20 has now been replaced by the Zojirushi BB-CEC20 (*Est. $240), although you may still find the older model in stores. The manufacturer confirms that the two models are identical with the exception of an updated exterior and two new color choices.

The Zojirushi BBCC-X20 is a highly advanced bread machine that boasts sourdough-starter and custom cycles. It has two mixing paddles, which do a better job than a single paddle at mixing and kneading. Owners say the Zojirushi bread machine is very flexible and can make jam, cakes and even meatloaf. Most prefer the Zojirushi breadmaker's horizontal loaves -- which look like store-bought sandwich bread -- to machines that bake vertically. While reviewers agree that the Zojirushi BBCC-X20 is the best full-featured bread machine, those who don't care about custom cycles or specialty items such as jam and meatloaf can get by with something far less expensive such as the Panasonic SD-YD250 (*Est. $150) or the basic West Bend Hi-Rise Breadmaker (*Est. $100).

The Zojirushi BBCC-X20 bread machine has garnered hundreds of owner-written reviews at Amazon.com and more than 300 at Cooking.com. We also found more than 90 owner-written ratings at Epinions.com. In his review for BreadMachineDigest.com, Robert Barnett bakes everything from multigrain sourdough to cinnamon rolls in his Zojirushi BBCC-X20 bread machine before rating it on performance, features and design. Editors at BreadInfo.com compare eight machines, giving them grades from "A+" to "B-," based upon appearance, performance, price, durability and customer service. The BBCC-X20 gets their highest "A+" rank. In a separate update, editors note that the BBCC-X20 has been replaced by the BB-CEC20, and that the two models are identical except for an updated exterior, which they call "stylish."

Robert Barnett bakes more than two dozen loaves of bread in his Zojirushi BBCC-X20, noting that the machine handles even the stiffest dough with ease. This is the highest-rated bread machine of the 13 models reviewed by Barnett. Still, he says he would like to see a touch screen, interior lights and longer rise cycles.

Of the five breadmakers tested by Mason Currey, the Zojirushi BBCC-X20 came in second only because of its price. Currey said the bread it produced could pass for store bought and highly recommends the BBCC-X20 (now the BB-CEC20) if money is no object.
