ThermoJet MicroLite

*Est. $40

Reviewed February 2008

pros
  • Uses alcohol (safest fuel type)
  • Quiet
  • Easy to use
  • Lightweight
cons
  • Slow
  • Small
  • Doesn't work well in cold temperatures

Most backpacking stoves use isobutene or propane fuel canisters; these fuels burn a long time, but they aren't the safest type of fuels to store, and you shouldn't use them indoors. For that reason, experts say an alcohol stove like the ThermoJet MicroLite is a safe choice for an emergency kit. Alcohol poses virtually no risk of explosion, and spills evaporate fast. However, alcohol just doesn't burn very hot, so boiling water takes a long time, and compared to isobutene/propane stoves, you need about twice as much fuel to accomplish the same task. The ThermoJet MicroLite weighs just 3 ounces. If you need a more powerful stove for camping, the MSR Reactor (*Est. $140) gets the best reviews, and it can boil a liter of water in less than three minutes.

Professional testing of alcohol stoves from BackpackingLight.com is the best source of information on this type of stove. Because the ThermoJet MicroLite is sold and manufactured by a small company, user reviews are scarce.
