Reviewers love that the Hamilton Beach Smooth Touch 76606Z leaves a smooth edge by opening cans around the side instead of the top. That said, it is fairly loud and doesn't have hands-free operation or an automatic shut-off. A number of owners had issues with dangerous metal shavings around the cut edge, but this may be due to user error. Customer service is another weak point.
A mixed bag. Fans of the Hamilton Beach Smooth Touch 76606Z love that it splits the seam between lid and can, leaving smooth edges on both. Some users, however, report making multiple passes to get the can open or dealing with sharp metal splinters around the cut surface -- and potentially in your food. Sometimes cutting too many times around a can be the cause for splinters (a user error), but we're not sure if that's the only issue here. The Smooth Touch is also relatively loud, struggles with some can sizes, and cannot be operated hands-free. Still, as one of the few electric smooth-edge can openers, it draws a fairly loyal following.
Questionable warranty policies. The Hamilton Beach 76606Z has a questionable durability record; some say it lasts for three to five years, while others complain that not only does it fail during the one-year warranty period, but customer service also tries to charge you for a replacement. "Had it less than four months when it quit opening all types of cans. Warranty Service wants you to pay for them to replace," explains one user at BedBathAndBeyond.com. No replacement parts are available, so if the cutting blades dull you have to replace the entire unit. On the upside, its retractable cord is a hit with users.
Almost 1,000 Amazon.com reviewers award the Hamilton Beach 76606Z can opener an average score of 4.2 stars. Most rave about how safely it opens cans, but we found a noteworthy number of complaints about metal shavings and durability issues.
