Bottom line

Although the Swing-A-Way Comfort Grip Jar Opener might not be quite up to the standard of its legendary predecessors, which lasted for decades (according to reviewers), most users agree it still opens jars of almost any size quickly and easily. Just position the Swing-A-Way Comfort Grip on the lid, squeeze the handles together and turn; the jar opener's length provides the extra leverage you need.

Ease of use

Almost nirvana. While the Swing-A-Way Comfort Grip Jar Opener comes with a slight learning curve, it's worth it, according to both owner and expert reviews. The editors of Cook's Illustrated write: "Its clamp grip is strong and sturdy, and lids of any size pop off with little effort." Only a few users struggle, saying the jar opener just slides around the lid. Users with arthritis offer split opinions: About half say the Swing-A-Way jar opener is a real blessing, while others find squeezing the handles together requires too much grip strength. It adjusts to fit a wide range of lid sizes from 0.5 to 4.5 inches in diameter.

Ownership

Compact and convenient. The Swing-A-Way Comfort Grip Jar Opener doesn't take up much space in your kitchen drawer, and older versions could be counted on to last for decades. "I have been using this item in my kitchen for 26 years. The same one," writes a happy owner at AceHardware.com. However, we found a noteworthy number of reviews claiming newer versions -- now made in China, instead of the United States -- aren't as sturdy. Swing-A-Way no longer offers an official warranty, but representatives say they'll replace defective or damaged units within reason.
