Bottom line

Older Swing-A-Way wall-mount can openers were legendary for their durability, but users say that more recent models, now manufactured in China (as opposed to the United States), are less durable but still work reasonably well. They also accommodate almost any can size. The crank mechanism is easy to operate, even for lefties or those with arthritis; and as long as you keep it clean, the magnet holds on to cut lids well.

Ease of use

A true space-saver. Most users love how the Swing-A-Way magnetic wall-mount can opener folds flat against the wall or cabinet when not needed. It'll also open almost any size can, although you have to hold the can at an angle to engage the cutting teeth. The crank mechanism is very easy to use -- even those suffering from arthritis agree. Lefties don't seem to mind that the crank is mounted on the right side; it's still easy enough to operate with your non-dominant hand. A magnet keeps the cut lids out of your food, and the opener is easy to take apart and clean.

Ownership

No official warranty. Most reviewers rave about older Swing-A-Way wall-mount can openers that lasted for decades -- and if you buy a new model, it still slides right into the old can opener's wall-mount. Unfortunately, new models don't seem to measure up to Swing-A-Way's old durability standards, a fact multiple reviewers blame on the move of manufacturing to China (from the USA). Swing-A-Way can openers used to be backed by an outstanding five-year warranty. Today, the company no longer offers an official warranty, but reviewers report Swing-A-Way representatives will replace defective models within reason.
