The Dyson DC39 Animal is a quiet, powerful vacuum designed to pick up pet hair, although its real claim to fame is its maneuverability and ease of use. With several attachments that are easy to switch out, the DC39 Animal can be used for everything from vacuuming floors to dusting blinds. It offers HEPA filtration and a bagless design, but owners say the canister has to be emptied often and can be messy.
Best for bare floors. Interestingly, the Dyson DC39 Animal -- so named for its ability to remove pet hair -- earns only fair ratings from one consumer testing organization for pet-hair pickup. Hundreds of owners posting to sites such as Amazon.com, BestBuy.com and Walmart.com disagree, saying long dog hair, dust bunnies and the like are no match for this machine. It earns a lower score for carpet cleaning, but does an excellent job on bare floors. However, it has some difficulty picking up larger pieces of debris such as dog food or Cheerios.
Minor sticking points, but great maneuverability. At less than 17 pounds, the Dyson DC39 Animal is average in terms of weight but weighs about three times as much as some compact canister vacs. Owners take issue with the power switch, which is located on the body of the canister instead of the handle. They also complain that the dirt canister is too small and requires frequent emptying, not to mention it can be messy to do so. On the other hand, some users say these are minor complaints and don't outweigh the Dyson-ball concept, which makes this canister vac easy to navigate around your home.
A quiet contender. In one professional roundup of 38 canister vacuums, the Dyson DC39 Animal earns a very good score for noise; while other canister vacs earn higher ratings, the DC39 Animal isn't irritatingly loud. Owners concur, noting that it's much quieter than older vacuum cleaners they've owned. A few also compare it to other Dyson models, saying it's quieter than the DC23.
No bags to contribute to waste; excellent filtration. The Dyson DC39 Animal doesn't use dust collection bags, so you're not contributing to environmental waste by constantly tossing bags in the trash. This canister vacuum earns excellent scores for emissions in one expert review, and it uses HEPA filtration to remove more and smaller particles from the air. It also earns a very good score for total airflow in the same roundup.
Long warranty and good durability. While the upfront cost of the Dyson DC39 Animal is high, owners say it's worth it thanks to its five-year warranty and ability to last several years beyond that with no breakdowns or major problems. That said, quite a few users say the plastic components feel flimsy. When parts do break, customer support is relatively cooperative but sticks to the terms. One Amazon.com owner says you can't return the vacuum after 30 days, but Dyson will make repairs. There are no bags to replace for the DC39 Animal and the lifetime HEPA filter is washable.
The Dyson DC39 Animal is among 38 canister vacuums rated by editors at ConsumerReports.org. Each vacuum is rated on noise, emissions, airflow, carpet, bare floors and pet-hair performance, as well as maneuverability. Eight models are recommended.
