The Dyson DC39 Multi Floor HEPA Bagless Canister Vacuum is a versatile machine capable of cleaning carpets, bare floors, pet hair and area rugs. It has a lightweight, easy-to-maneuver design and useful attachments for hard-to-reach areas, although there are some complaints about clogging. Some users also say the dirt canister is messy to empty, but there are no bags to replace. Switching between flooring types is easy with the controls located on the handle.
All-around star performer. The Dyson DC39 Multi Floor cleans both bare floors and carpets, and it also removes pet hair and is great for baseboards and edges, according to owners posting feedback at sites such as Amazon.com, Sears.com and Walmart.com. Users say it has powerful suction, and most agree that it picks up dust and debris from most surfaces with a single pass. Its profile is low enough to reach under most furniture. While many owners call the plastic components of this vacuum flimsy, we didn't read many complaints about broken pieces or malfunctioning units.
Great maneuverability with some clogging issues. The Dyson DC39 is easy to operate, users say, with a lightweight design and convenient attachments including a stair tool, crevice tool and adjustable wand that make it useful for cleaning many hard-to-reach areas. However, some complain of a few common problems related to usability. The dirt canister creates a mess if not emptied carefully, so some owners suggest emptying it outdoors. The hose and beater bar also tend to clog, especially when cleaning up long hair, and clogs can be difficult to clear.
Exceptionally quiet. Owners across the board agree that the Dyson DC39 Multi Floor is impressively quiet considering its powerful suction. "I was impressed with the low noise relative to most heavy suction vacuums," posts one user at BestBuy.com. However, a few others say that if a small rock or pebble makes its way into the canister, it tends to make quite a bit of noise as it rattles around inside the container.
Great filtration for allergy sufferers. With two levels of filtration and a HEPA allergen filter, the Dyson DC39 Multi Floor is a good choice for allergy sufferers. It's not included in professional roundups that test vacuum cleaners for emissions, however. One potential issue is emptying the dirt canister, which allows some dirt and debris to escape back into the environment. Otherwise, the vacuum doesn't have any standout energy-efficient characteristics.
Excellent customer support. The Dyson DC39 is backed by a five-year warranty, which is longer than the typical canister vacuum warranty of one to two years. We read a few reports of positive customer service experiences, as well as Dyson representatives offering suggestions in response to reviews at retail sites. "I thought I would have to pay for a new head and was surprised that they were willing to send me another one, no questions asked. Great service in that respect," says one owner at Lowes.com. There are no bags to replace and the filters are washable, so there are no ongoing costs of ownership.
