For reviews of the Kidde KN-COPP-B, we consulted Consumer Reports magazine -- which tests and compares numerous models -- and a top-five list on About.com. Numerous owners also weigh in at Amazon.com, along with a handful at PriceGrabber.

Experts say Kidde stands out for the accuracy, speed and durability of its carbon monoxide (CO) detectors. The Kidde KN-COPP-B is battery operated, so it will keep working during a power outage (when many people use carbon-monoxide-generating fireplaces or heaters). Because safety experts say the best location for a CO detector is high up on a wall, the Kidde allows for flexible installation. This unit has an electrochemical sensor, continuous digital readout with a large backlit display, peak-level memory (which records the highest CO level), a low-battery indicator, a front-loading battery door and a five-year limited warranty. This CO detector is also sold as the 900-0146. Those who aren't diligent about replacing batteries should consider the plug-in Kidde KN-COPP-3 (*est. $45).
