Our Assessment

This is the best source we found for carpet-cleaner advice, as many models are reviewed, with some netting over 200 write-ups. The runaway winner is the Hoover SteamVac with Clean Surge F5914-900. Nearly 1,000 users have collectively given it a near-perfect 4.5-star rating (out of five). But users will want to check model numbers on Hoovers. That's because other models, like the Hoover F7425-900 SteamVac Dual V, receive only average ratings from reviewers. Also highly rated is the Dirt Devil MCE7900 Platinum Force Carpet Extractor, with about 160 reviews and a four-star rating. Other favorites include the Hoover F6215-900 SteamVac Agility Carpet Cleaner and the Bissell SpotBot 1200-B.

Our Assessment

Target.com has fewer reviews than Amazon.com but sells enough models to make comparisons. We focused on models with more than a handful of comments apiece. The two top-rated upright carpet cleaners are the Bissell QuickSteamer Lightweight Deep Cleaner 1770 and the Bissell ProHeat 2X 9200T. Both receive about four stars (out of five). The popular Bissell SpotBot and SpotBot Pet have about 75 reviews each and a 4.5-star rating.

Our Assessment

Walmart.com has more reviews for carpet cleaners than any other source except for Amazon.com, but the models with the most reviews are Wal-Mart exclusives that are not sold elsewhere. The most popular model here is the Hoover SteamVac Silver F5915-900, which receives a very high average rating in more than 400 reviews. Highly rated spot cleaners include the Bissell Little Green and the Bissell SpotBot.

Our Assessment BestBuy.com doesn't sell as many different carpet cleaners as some other online retailers, but several of the models they do sell have plenty of reviews. The most highly rated carpet cleaners here are the Hoover SteamVac with Clean Surge F5914-900 and the Bissell ProHeat 2X CleanShot 9500. The Bissell ProHeat 2X 9200 also receives quite a few reviews and an above-average rating.

Steam Cleaners

Our Assessment There aren't nearly as many owner-written ratings here for carpet cleaners as at Amazon.com and Target.com, making Epinions.com a less valuable resource. Still, we found some helpful information. The Hoover F7452-900 SteamVac Upright receives low ratings here, while positive write-ups for the Hoover SteamVac F5914-900 reflect like ratings elsewhere. The Bissell SpotBot 1200-B is also highly rated.

Our Assessment

No testing methods are shared, but this site offers more detailed reviews than any other non-retail site we found. It selects five as Best Buys and two as Budget Buys out of the 18 carpet cleaners reviewed. On the whole, the choices line up with what we found on other sites, although the exact model of one of its Best Buy choices, the Hoover SteamVac Dual V Widepath F7425-900, is no longer available.

Our Assessment HSN.com sells several Hoover and Bissell carpet cleaners, some of which receive quite a few reviews. A few models here are designated as customer picks, but only one of these -- the Hoover SteamVac Dual V -- receives more than a handful of ratings.

Hoover SteamVac Plus
by Barbara Whiting
Our Assessment

About.com's guide to appliances Barbara Whiting tests the SteamVac Plus and proclaims it a good, easy-to-use cleaner. This model is no longer available, but her comments may apply to similar Hoover SteamVac cleaners. Whiting notes that the SteamVac Plus can leave streaks on the carpet (a complaint we didn't find elsewhere) and is heavy, but she likes its dual reservoirs and long hose, which she says are good for upholstery and car cleaning. (Note: ConsumerSearch is owned by About.com, but the two don't share an editorial affiliation.)

Our Assessment About a dozen carpet cleaners receive reviews on Sears' website, and we found helpful information on few of these. The Bissell 2080 QuickSteamer PowerBrush gets rave reviews, and the Kenmore Professional Carpet Shampooer/Hard Floor Cleaner also fares well. The Bissell Spot Lifter PowerBrush Handheld gets below-average reviews, with complaints similar to those found on other sites.

Our Assessment Several of the dozen or so steam cleaners Lowes.com sells have reviews, but most models have only a few comments from owners. There's a little more feedback for the Hoover SteamVac All-Terrain F7452-900 and the Bissell QuickSteamer PowerBrush 2080, both of which receive above-average ratings.

Our Assessment Hard-floor cleaners and all-purpose steam cleaners are also included in the "carpet cleaners" category, so you'll have to wade through a lot to find the product you're most interested in. Most of the carpet cleaners receive only a few reviews.
