Like most premium cat food brands, Newman's Own uses only USDA-graded meat and other human-quality ingredients, with no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. But Newman's Own takes it a step further: Every flavor contains at least 70 percent organic ingredients, raised without chemical pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers.
"Although Newman's Own Organics Cat Food is slightly more expensive than other brands of cat food, cat owners do not seem to mind," writes Carolyn Glatz at PetFoodTalk.com, who rates it well for its "extremely high quality organic ingredients." Tracie Hotchner, author of "The Cat Bible" and host of the syndicated radio show "Cat Chat," also recommends Newman's Own Organics canned cat food (though that's not a complete surprise as Hotchner's father, author A.E. Hotchner, founded Newman's Own with his friend, actor Paul Newman).
Franny Syufy, About.com's guide to cats, names Newman's Own Organics Chicken and Brown Rice as one of the best canned cat foods you can buy -- and one of her cats' personal favorites. "These chickens are fed a 100% natural all-vegetable diet with NO antibiotics," she writes.
Newman's Own Organics costs less than some non-organic premium foods, such as Halo Spot's Stew Wholesome Chicken Recipe (Est. $1.60 for a 5.5-oz. can) . However, those foods are largely grain-free, while Newman's Own includes brown rice. Some experts say too much grain isn't good for cats, which are strict carnivores, yet some of those -- including Hotchner -- still recommend Newman's Own.
Like all Newman's Own products, Newman's Own Organics pet food donates all profits to charity -- animal charities, in this case.
"I feel good about buying it since proceeds go to charity," one Amazon.com customer writes. Another says, "No profit to me means that this company really does have the cats' welfare at heart."
