- Good percentage of meat
- Limited amount of filler
- Too many grains
- Animal by-products
- False savings
An analysis of labels shows that Purina ONE has higher-quality ingredients than most inexpensive dry cat foods. Reviews aren't complimentary of dry food in general and usually don't recommend inexpensive brands, which contain more grain fillers. Purina ONE Chicken and Rice Formula has a lot of chicken, but it also has corn gluten, poultry by-product meal and wheat flour -- fillers that experts say do little good for cats. Because cats will have to eat more to meet their protein needs, reviews indicate that the lower price of Purina ONE offers a false savings over premium dry foods like Wellness Complete Health Deboned Chicken, Chicken Meal and Rice Recipe (*est. $18 for a 5.9-pound bag). Still, with 34 percent protein, Purina ONE Chicken and Rice Formula is a better choice than other inexpensive dry foods.
We found no reviews that offer extensive recommendations on the dry cat food commonly found in supermarkets. Helpful information about interpreting dry cat food labels is available, however, from the Ask Susan Peters website, About.com and CatInfo.org.
