Best dry cat food, but expensive
- High meat content
- Low carbohydrates
- No grains, glutens or carbohydrates
- Expensive
- Few fruits and vegetables
Wellness CORE is a grain-free, high-protein dry cat food that's earning top grades from reviewers. Notably, the top four ingredients, and five of the top six, are meats or meat meals. Not surprisingly, the food is tops at delivering protein, which is guaranteed to be not less than 50 percent. The vegetable count is low, though potatoes are included for fiber and to hold the food together. The food is free from additives, glutens and by-products. Innova EVO (*est. $18 for a 6.6-pound bag) is a similar food, and delivers similar protein, but is harder to find. Natural Balance Ultra (*est. $14 for a 6.6-pound bag) is a good choice among less expensive foods. It is not grain free, but doesn't contain undesirable grains such as corn, and there are no by-products or glutens.
We saw the best reviews for Wellness CORE at About.com and PetFoodRatings.com, where reviewers are so impressed with the food that they are offering it to their own cats. Ask Susan Peters is not as enamored of some of the ingredients used, but in the end calls Wellness CORE a healthy food. User reviews can be read at Zootoo.com and Petco.com.
