Wellness Core Fish & Fowl Recipe for Adult Cats & Kittens is a grain-free, high-protein dry cat food that's earning top grades from reviewers. Notably, the top four ingredients, and five of the top six, are meats or meat meals. Not surprisingly, the food is tops at delivering protein, which is guaranteed to be not less than 50 percent. The vegetable count is low, though potatoes are included for fiber and to hold the food together. The food is free from additives, glutens and by-products. Natural Balance Ultra Premium (*Est. $13 for a 6-lb. bag) is a good choice among less expensive dry foods. It is not grain free, but doesn't contain undesirable grains such as corn, and there are no by-products or glutens.
We saw the best reviews for Wellness Core dry cat food at About.com and PetFoodRatings.com, where reviewers are so impressed with the food that they are offering it to their own cats. Wellness also earns high marks at PetsumerReport.com, another site that scrutinizes ingredients with great care. Susan Peters takes a different view. She is not as enamored with some of the ingredients used, and like many other foods on her site has downgraded it severely since last year. We found useful feedback from cat owners at several retail sites, and an interesting evaluation of Wellness as a company (with a focus on its environmental impact) by Holly Tse at GreenLittleCat.com.

The site owner at this pet food ratings page gives Wellness Core his highest rating, praising the high protein content and use of high-quality salmon and flaxseed oils. He adds that Wellness Core is what he's currently feeding his own cats. He finds no negatives except that the vegetable and fruit content is low, but he says that's forgivable.

This site is all about pet food. Susan Thixton gives this Wellness Core variety a perfect rating, significantly higher than the rating for the regular Wellness dry cat food.
Review: Cat Food, Susan Thixton
Susan Peters takes issue with the inclusion of certain ingredients in Wellness Core dry cat food -- namely chicken fat, natural chicken flavor and potatoes (which she calls a cheap filler) -- and gives it a rating of just 4 out of 10. That's a significant drop from last year, when she rated the food much higher (8 out of 10).

This cat lover evaluates Wellness, along with five other health-food[D3] cat food companies, with a focus on their environmental impact and practices. She is pleased that Wellness uses ingredients mostly from the U.S. (except for taurine and Vitamin C, and lamb and venison from New Zealand) -- all tested by the vendors and again by Wellness. However, she's quite disappointed by the replies from the company's representative about its environmental practices.
