Best CD player
- Sophisticated electronics
- MP3 file support
- Good build quality
- On-board storage of up to 25 tracks
- Expensive
- Single-disc player
- No SACD or HDCD support
February 2009. Although expensive relative to other CD players in its class, experts say that you'll need to spend much more to find a better CD player than the Onkyo DX-7555. It's loaded with high-end technology once found only in audiophile-grade components, reviews say. Sound quality and build quality -- including an anti-resonant chassis -- draw raves. MP3 file support is included, but there are no decoders for SACD or HDCD discs (special high-definition audio discs). The ability to store up to 25 music tracks in the player's memory is a nice bonus. Among similar CD players, the Marantz CD5003 (*est. $350) is also worth considering. It's a little less expensive, but lacks the on-board memory of the Onkyo DX-7555. Support for WMA files is added, and that might appeal to some. Musicians may appreciate the CD5003's ability to alter the pitch of a CD, or to replay a given portion of a track by a few seconds.
We found great professional and user reviews for the Onkyo DX-7555 CD player. Among the pros, Stereophile magazine covers the Onkyo DX-7555 in two separate reviews and extensively documents bench testing. The Absolute Sound covers the Onkyo DX-7555 as part of a review of a "budget" system. Consumer Guide also weighs in, though the quality of the reviews certainly lags behind. There aren't a ton of user reviews, but some feedback can be found at Amazon.com and AudioReview.com.

This is easily the most comprehensive review of the Onkyo DX-7555 CD player. Robert Deutsch conducts extensive hands-on testing, comparing the CD player with two more expensive alternatives and coming away fairly impressed. Deutsch's conclusions are supplemented by the results of formal bench testing conducted by Stereophile's editor, John Atkinson. A second, shorter review by Wes Phillips adds insight.

Barry Willis looks at the Onkyo DX-7555 as part of this article, which examines "budget" audio components that he says can hold its own against more costly alternatives. Though discussion is limited, the Onkyo DX-7555 is favorably compared to a $5,000 universal player and highly recommended.
Review: Three Bargain Products, Three Fine Performers, Barry Willis, Nov. 5, 2006
While we rate Consumer Guide's expertise far below that of Stereophile magazine or The Absolute Sound, it's clear that someone spent a good deal of time with the Onkyo DX-7555 CD player before creating this review. Sound quality is described as excellent, and build quality is praised.
