If you want a handset with a full QWERTY keyboard at a low price and you don't mind limited features, reviews say the Samsung Gravity SGH-T459 slider cell phone is not a bad choice. Aside from the keyboard, it's a "thoroughly average midrange phone," says PCMag.com's Sascha Segan. You'll make do with no 3G network support, no GPS, a paltry 1.3-megapixel camera/camcorder, basic music player and call quality that reviewers describe as anywhere from disappointing to "good but not great." One plus is that the Samsung Gravity is a quad-band (world) phone that can operate in most places around the globe. Owner reviews frequently criticize battery performance, but professional reviewers usually get at least six hours of talk time -- PCMag.com recorded nearly 11 hours.

Reviews are divided about where the Samsung Gravity SGH-T459 stands in the market. PCMag.com's Segan says that with the demise of the T-Mobile Sidekick iD, the Samsung Gravity is the best low-end choice for a full QWERTY keyboard. InfoSyncWorld.com's Philip Berne, however, suggests the Samsung Rant as "a much better option at the same price." Multimedia fans should note that while the Samsung Gravity is supposed to accept microSD cards up to 4 GB, Segan said he could not get anything higher than 2 GB cards to function. As with any T-Mobile phones, reviews complain that T-Mobile blocks third-party apps like the Opera Mini browser, so the web surfing experience is a bit lacking.

We found the best coverage at PCMag, CNET, InfoSyncWorld and ConsumerReports.org. MobileBurn.com usually has longer reviews than many people might want to read, but the Samsung Gravity SGH-T459, covered by a guest contributor, gets a shorter treatment, and the regular battery test appears to have been skipped in favor of less formal testing. CNET has by far the largest pool of owner reviews, about 40. There is just a handful at Amazon.com.

1. PCMag.com

Sascha Segan says the Samsung Gravity is a "thoroughly average midrange phone." But it is cheap, and the slide-out QWERTY keyboard has keys that are easy to type on, albeit slightly sticky. He says the promised 4 GB microSD cards don't work; you'll have to settle for 2 GB.

2. CNET

Nicole Lee rates the Samsung Gravity as "very good," and more than 40 user reviews combine to reach the same conclusion. She likes the variety of features for the price, but call quality is "muffled" and has static. Battery life tested at two hours more than the promised six hours of talk time.

3. InfoSyncWorld.com

Philip Berne says the Samsung Rant "is a much better option at the same price" among QWERTY phones, but the Samsung Gravity is still better then the (now discontinued) Samsung Sidekick iD. The lack of 3G and GPS are major issues for Berne, and the camera delivers substandard results too.

4. ConsumerReports.org

Consumer Reports rates more than 50 cell phones. The Samsung Gravity is one of more than a dozen T-Mobile models tested.

5. MobileTechReview.com

Tong Zhang likes the keyboard, music player and gaming features. But "it doesn't have 3G like QWERTY feature phones on other US carriers. For power users, the phone is hobbled by T-Mobile's lack of support for streaming media, GPS and music store."

6. Mobileburn.com

This review by guest contributor Marc Lynde is shorter and less thorough than MobileBurn's usual effort. The battery "was not subjected to rigorous testing," for instance. "I wish it had a 3.5 mm headphone jack and threaded SMS support," Lynde says.

About 15 owner reviews combine for a good overall score, but even most of the positive reviews criticize the battery performance.
