Top-quality gas chainsaw
- Reduced fuel consumption and emissions
- Powerful 38.2 cc engine
- Excellent safety features
- Two-year warranty
- Gas engines pollute more than electric ones do
- Relatively expensive
The 240 e-series is a fairly new Husqvarna chainsaw and features new engine technology that is designed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. It also has Smart Start technology for easy starting, tool-free chain tensioning, an inertia-activated chain brake and a vibration dampening system, including anti-vibration handles, which help combat fatigue. With a 38.2 cc engine, it has plenty of power for moderate-to-heavy cutting -- the kind done most often by homeowners. If you plan to use your chainsaw less regularly and want to spend less for a gas model, experts recommend the Poulan Pro PP3516AVX (*Est. $140).
We found the most credible review of the Husqvarna 240 e-series in Popular Mechanics, based on tests of seven fairly new gas chainsaws. We also looked at owner reviews posted on NorthernTool.com, although there are fewer than 10 of them. Reviews of the more expensive and consistently high-rated Husqvarna 455 Rancher (*Est. $415) can also be helpful, because the two models share some common features, and certain observations may apply to both models.

To test seven gas chainsaws with engine sizes from 35 cc to 38 cc, a Popular Mechanics team "spent three days pruning an ancient orchard, felling trees and crosscutting them into logs." Based on the results, each of the seven chainsaws is given a rating of up to five stars. The Husqvarna 240e is rated a perfect five out of five. Reviewers praise its Smart Start technology, smooth operation and vibration dampening system. They conclude, "This is a great saw." Husqvarna recommends a 13- to 16-inch bar; the tested model's bar was 16 inches long.
