For those on tight budgets, few laptops do a better job of giving you more for less than the 16-inch HP G60-440us. The heart of this laptop is a dual-core Pentium CPU. Although that's older technology, and it's bit slower than the Core 2 Duo processors found in more expensive laptops, it is superior to the less capable AMD and Intel Celeron processors found in many other laptops in this price range. The 320 GB hard drive, 3 GB of RAM and other features are also above average for the class. If you have more to spend, the 13-inch Gateway UC7807u (*Est. $650) is a svelte traveling companion that's just a touch chunkier than ultraportable laptops. It's also blessed with a more powerful processor than the HP G60-440us and offers loads of extras.
Save for a slightly faster processor, the HP G60-440us is very similar to the just-discontinued HP G60-235DX (which was a Best Buy exclusive) and HP G60-230US. The best testing-based review is by CNET, which reports on the HP G60-235DX. Mark Kyrnin of About.com provides a balanced review of the HP G60-230US, but doesn't describe the testing process. User reviews of the HP G60-230us are plentiful and can be found at Amazon.com, Newegg.com and elsewhere.

CNET reviews nearly 24 retail laptops and names the HP G60-235dx as the best option among entry-level laptops. Features and performance are described as the best in its price range. Battery life is another plus. The design is criticized as bland and the keyboard as flimsy, however. Except for a few minor upgrades, such as a slightly faster processor, the HP G60-440us is similar to the HP G60-235dx.

Mark Kyrnin, About.com's guide to PC hardware, looks at the HP G60-230us and comes away only modestly impressed. He decries some of the corners that have been cut, such as the lack of an ExpressCard port, but he also finds some positives, such as the 16-inch screen and a hard drive that's pretty big for this price class. Newegg.com's users tend to be tech savvy, so it's a good source for laptop reviews. Though the HP G60-440us is not available here as of press time, the similar HP G60-230us is. User satisfaction seems high, with more than 90 percent rating it either four or five out of five. The few negative reviews seem to revolve around laptops that arrived broken and customer service issues.
