Catalogue Critic: Giving Thanks, With Cheesecake
by Troy McMullen
Our AssessmentThe Wall Street Journal's tasting panel, which includes a hotel chef, samples five plain, traditional cheesecakes available by mail. Junior's emerges the winner for its dense, creamy consistency. Although Junior's is a plain cheesecake, its sponge-cake base is not exactly traditional. We found Junior's win particularly puzzling in light of the fact that a non-traditional cheesecake from Artisanal, which had a pecan shortbread crust, was "bounced" from the competition. 800Cheesecake's product tasted like "cotton candy" atop "cardboard."

In Cheesecake City, a Quest for the Best
by Ed Levine
Our AssessmentVeteran food writer Ed Levine crisscrosses New York City in search of the finest cheesecake the city has to offer. In the process, he forks into nearly 50 cheesecakes. Eileen's Special Cheesecake, which ships anywhere in the United States, tops his list. Levine loves this "ethereally light, not too sweet" confection. Unfortunately, this appears to be the only cheesecake on the list that's available by mail.

The Best Cheesecakes in New York (and Therefore the U.S.?)
by Ed Levine
Our AssessmentLevine lists seven "indisputably delicious" cheesecakes in this update to his 2004 New York Times cheesecake. Although he doesn't say which plain cheesecake he likes best, he does pick Yura & Company's turtle as the best topped cheesecake in town. The popular Junior's cheesecake is "fine," but Eileen's Special Cheesecake, Mona Lisa Pastry, Two Little Red Hens and Monteleone's -- Cammereri's all sell phenomenal versions, according to Levine.

Give the Gift of Noshing
by Ed Levine
Our AssessmentLevine's top two mail-order cheesecakes are Junior's and Eileen's. If he had to choose, he'd go with Eileen's lighter version, but Junior's "obscenely rich primordial ooze is legendary." Eileen's has a superior crust.

The Best Mail Order Holiday Desserts
by David Rosengarten
Our AssessmentDavid Rosengarten lists several of his favorite holiday treats, but we're not sure how large his sample size was. Junior's pumpkin cheesecake, a cross between cheesecake and pumpkin pie, makes the list. Rosengarten raves about its "great dairy flavor" and "pumpkin pie spices."

Food Picks: Best Cheesecake
by Editors of New York Magazine
Our AssessmentNew York magazine selects its best cheesecake of 2006, Lady M Cake Boutique's gateau nuage cheesecake. The cake is topped with a layer of sour cream and has a graham-cracker crust. Editors say it practically "floats." They don't describe their testing methodology. Lady M does ship outside New York, for the cost of overnight shipping and a $20 handling fee.
