The LG DLG4802W is a 7.1-cubic-foot gas dryer with a variety of useful features: a moisture sensor with five dryness settings, 10 preset drying cycles, an interior drum light and a reversible door. Although a gas dryer costs a little more initially, experts say owners may recoup that expense over time because natural gas is usually cheaper than electricity.
In professional tests, this dryer doesn't perform quite as well as the top-rated Samsung DV520AGW/XAA (*Est. $1,050) ; both excel at drying, but the LG is a bit smaller and not as quiet. However, user reviews for the LG are, if anything, stronger than those for the Samsung. Owners say the DLG4802W dries clothes quickly and effectively, with very little wrinkling. A couple of users note that mixed laundry loads may not dry evenly, but this can be a problem with any dryer. In all our sources, we didn't find a single truly negative review for this dryer.
Like other gas dryers, the LG DLG4802W hasn't been tested at ConsumerReports.org, but it nonetheless receives an evaluation based on the performance of its electric equivalent, the LG DLE4801W (*Est. $750) . For a gas dryer, the DLG4802W has a reasonable number of user reviews; we found about 30 at HomeDepot.com and another 30 or so scattered across other sites (BestBuy.com, AJMadison.com and the LG site). The J.D. Power and Associates 2011 Laundry Appliance Satisfaction Study provides useful information about the LG brand as a whole, including reliability, features and price.
ConsumerReports.org doesn't test gas clothes dryers, but it does rate more than 80 of them -- including the LG DLG4802W -- based on their electric equivalents' performance. Each dryer receives an overall rating, as well as individual scores on drying performance, capacity, convenience and noise.
