Where to Buy

Even though the Samsung DV448AGW gas dryer costs more than its electric twin, the Samsung DV448AEW (*Est. $1,025), experts say gas dryers cost less to run in the long haul. The Samsung DV448AGW includes a very large 7.4-cubic-foot capacity, five temperature levels, a moisture sensor and a steam feature that reduces wrinkles and freshens clothing. It's backed by a one-year warranty, although the electronic control board is covered for two years. Two professional reviews give high marks to the Samsung dryer, and Samsung is also the top-rated brand of dryers in J.D. Power and Associates' 2009 survey of customer satisfaction with major brands of washers and dryers. Reviewers say the steam setting works well, and it also gets high marks for drying performance and quiet operation. However, two user reviewers say that bulky items such as blankets take longer to dry than they expected. If you don't need steam, the Amana NGD7200TW (Discontinued) is also highly rated, but it doesn't offer a steam cycle.

ConsumerReports.org tests the electric version of the Samsung DV448AGW. Since previous testing has shown that gas and electric dryers have similar performance, the gas dryer is also rated on several criteria, including noise and drying performance. Good Housekeeping magazine also includes the Samsung steam dryer in a test. Unfortunately, user reviews for the Samsung DV448AGW are scarce, but we found a few ratings at AJMadison.com.
