Breaking it down

Features

Good array of features. The Joy Mangano My Little Steamer is pretty feature-rich compared to most handheld garment steamers. It has an on/off switch -- something not found on most handheld steamers -- with an indicator light so that you know if you accidentally leave it on. However, if you do forget to turn it off, the steamer shuts off automatically as well. The 8-foot power cord is retractable -- again, something not seen on most small steamers. The My Little Steamer also comes in eight colors (as of this update) and a matching storage bag is included.

Ease of use

Very straightforward. One thing experts and users all agree on is that the Joy Mangano My Little Steamer is as simple as a machine comes -- simply fill it with tap water and plug it in to create steam. Users say it's ready to steam in less than two minutes. We were not able to ascertain how long it continuously steams as no reviewer covers that, although, from comments by tester Camille Perri at TheSweethome.com we know that it's at least nine minutes. We also saw comments from owners saying it steams long enough to de-wrinkle a blouse and trousers. The wide mouth is very easy to remove, fill and replace securely, Perri notes, and the measurement markers are handy guides. While, at about two pounds, it's very light, as with all steamers we saw complaints from people whose hands or arms got tired before they finished their steaming tasks.

Performance

A sturdy, reliable performer. The 900-watt Joy Mangano My Little Steamer gets rave reviews from professional and user reviewers who say it performs well, heats quickly and produces a steady stream of steam that effective works to de-wrinkle a wide variety of fabrics. While most reviewers attest to its sturdiness and durability, we saw some dissenters. A few say it leaks or "spits" water. Others say it stopped working -- or stopped working properly -- after just a few months. However, for most people that's not a deal-breaker and it doesn't even bring down their affection for the My Little Steamer; for the price and performance, they say, they just buy another one.
