SOS Online Backup

Pros
  • More functionality than most services
  • Backs up several different devices
  • Backs up locally as well as online
  • Unlimited file versioning
Cons
  • Limited storage space

Bottom Line

SOS Online Backup supports up to five computers or Apple devices and backs up data both online and locally. The service can also back up Apple and Android smartphones and tablets. Mobile support is robust and SOS Online Backup has unlimited file versioning. Reviewers say that while it has more functionality than competing services, including unlimited file versioning, SOS Online Backup also sports an easy-to-use interface with advanced customization options.

Ease of Use

For novices and advanced users alike. SOS Online Backup's interface gets high marks for being user-friendly. Reviewers state that it is easy to use for novices, while advanced users will appreciate the customization options. Critics say SOS is simple to set up and operate. Users are guided through the steps to set up the initial backup and then to schedule subsequent automatic backups.

Both uploads and downloads move quickly, and restoring files is painless. Customer support is available through chat, email and submitting requests through tickets. Online support includes videos and community forums.

Features

Backs up many devices; never deletes your data. SOS Online Backup is packed with features, although that comes at a higher cost than competing online backup services. While most services only back up Windows PCs or Macs, SOS can also back up iPhones, Facebook profiles, Android phones or tablets, and external hard drives or network-attached storage drives. You can back up five computers with one account and access your files from any computer with Internet access. There are also numerous features that allow you to share files with friends.

SOS offers much more security than other online backup services. SOS Online Backup protects your data locally with 256-bit AES encryption and transfers information to the company's servers over a 128-bit SSL connection. It then secures your data even further at its data center, slapping an additional layer of 1,024-bit AES encryption.

SOS Online Backup never deletes your data, even if you do; it offers unlimited file versioning, meaning that if you unexpectedly need a file you deleted a year ago, SOS will let you restore it.

Plans

No unlimited storage plan. Like MozyHome, SOS Online Backup doesn't offer an unlimited storage option; instead, the basic plan at $10 per month allows up to 100 GB of data from up to five different computers or devices. Options with 150 GB (Est. $16 per month) and 250 GB (Est. $20 per month) are also available, with discounts available with yearly subscriptions. There are no unlimited storage plans, a situation that some reviewers complain about. (As of May 2013, the SOS website is advertising unlimited plans starting at $10 per month, but it's not clear how long that will last.)
