The Technivorm Moccamaster Thermal (*Est. $300) is considerably more expensive than standard coffee makers (as many thermal models are), but reviews say it's well worth the cost. In professional tests, it gets lower scores for carafe handling than other thermal coffee makers, but it stands out from the crowd for its excellent brew performance, speedy brew times and the top-quality taste of the resulting brew, thanks to its ability to brew coffee at the perfect temperature (205 degrees Fahrenheit). The biggest downside: It's not programmable, but if taste is your top priority, this is the coffee maker for you.
If you don't want to shell out a few hundred dollars but still want a thermal coffee maker, reviews say the Zojirushi Fresh Brew EC-BD15 (*Est. $90) is a good choice. Unlike the Technivorm model, this coffee maker is programmable and features an automatic shut-off function. One caveat: Because of its design, the heated water flows through a tube in the water reservoir, which can lower brew temperatures and sacrifice taste if the water in the reservoir is too cool.
