Known primarily as a manufacturer of commercial products, with the thermal-carafe BTX Bunn takes a different approach to brewing a fresh pot of coffee at home. This coffee maker holds a reserve of heated water in a stainless-steel reservoir and brews a 10-cup pot in half the time of other automatic-drip coffee makers. The premise behind this system is that a faster brewing time reduces coffee bitterness. However, experts say the water temperature isn't optimal. Owners are mostly pleased with the coffee flavor and the easy-to-use design. Bunn backs this coffee maker with a three-year warranty. If you want a coffee maker with a thermal carafe, programmable start and automatic shutoff, the Zojirushi Fresh Brew (*Est. $90) also costs less.
ConsumerReports.org rates and ranks the Bunn BTX among 36 other automatic-drip coffee makers. Cook's Illustrated magazine evaluated the Bunn BTX with seven other coffee makers in 2008. We found about 275 owner reviews at Amazon.com and about a dozen at Epinions.com.
